Rockfax Description
Wonderful positions, combined with superb rock and climbing mark out this long sea-level traverse as one of the coastlines best deep water solo's (S1). As described here, the vast majority of the climbing is above deep water and the crux is very low. It is not possible to describe the route in great detail, so easily-definable sections are used.
The Great Cave to the Pink Block.
From the ledges in the Great Cave, traverse rightwards, then cross a tricky corner. Drop down, then gradually rise, to drop down again onto the colourful 'Rainbow' wall. Traverse this wall on good, but spaced pockets, then drop down and strenuously exit the wall for a low resting-position under the Pink Block.
The Pink Block to the Crystal Cave.
From the Pink Block, continue along, and a little up, to pass under a large white block. Steady climbing gains the very deep Crystal Cave and a good rest.
The Crystal Cave (Crux-pitch).
Move out of the Crystal Cave to a blank wall beyond. Climb across this, first up and then gradually head downwards, to a series of big sloping holds. From the final sloping hold, stretch for a hidden finger-jug, and use it to gain the resting corner to the right. Climb the technical corner up to the upper ledges.
The Crux-pitch to the Cod Tympani Buttress.
If climbing the route as a DWS, it is recommended to escape from the cliff for this next section, then go back down the line indicated. This avoids the original (S3) traverse, which, although good, finishes over a jutting reef below the boulder-choke in the big corner. Exit the crux-pitch easily to the cliff top, then walk along the hillside to gain the top of the easy downclimb to reach sea level once more.
Cod Tympani Buttress to The Wave.
Traverse easily under the roof of Cod Tympani Buttress, to reach the start of The Wave - a diagonal feature of textured strata, that soars diagonally rightwards. Either climb this strenuously, or stay low and take on the technical traverse, staying close to the sea.
The Wave to the Terminal Zawn.
Steady traversing leads to the entrance of Terminal Zawn. Traverse rightwards into the zawn to gain the hanging back wall. The final moves to gain the big white finishing ledge are slightly unsafe being above a ledge not water; use discretion here, a short swim would not be too frowned upon! © Rockfax

tim newton 10 Sep, 2014 DWS O/S The sea was a bit rough, so I had to do it at low tide so the route wasn't getting sprayed. The combination of a spring low tide, choppy sea and being the only one around certainly added some spice. The crux section felt super hard, but the route was a bit greasy. The difficult section of the second half was incredibly greasy, I was as close to falling off that as I was the main crux. Did the finish through terminal zawn, which is steady enough when above the ledge, but definitely not a place to fall off.

alice fuller 21 Aug, 2014 Solo dnf Climbed the crux pitch first go with the brilliant Ken via Pete beta. You certainly need a lot of different skills to get this.. pockets, slopers, crimps, some stretchy moves and mean sidepull to find myself at the base of "the groove" and too wussy to go up the thing_ even with Pete saying that is a doable 6b with a goey move to a pinch at the end, the height freaked me.. so I swam to Eight ball and out there.Climbed the second half clean 2 days ago- but still need to do it all again with the groove to get the tick.Hmm.

andy_pemberton 6 Aug, 2014 Solo With the climb out to the grass (felt high and scary as I went straight up instead of veering right) after the crux and the down climb of 'Eight Ball' inc. 'The Wave' (just hung on). Low tide in Terminal Zawn so took the 'Gluteus Maximums' finish but fell in at the end of the downclimb (the barnacles gave way). I'm still counting it as a tick! Full body work out.

Misha 3 Aug, 2014 Solo O/S Amazing! Loads of great climbing on great rock - quite possibly the best limestone I've come across in the UK with flowstone and pocket features, holds just where you need them and beautiful pink and red rock on some sections. A bit polished in places but that doesn't detract too much. A real party atmosphere on the first half with loads of people doing/trying it (had to queue a bit in places) and an inflatable to fish out the unfortunate! In the sun with a high tide -a perfect combination. To the Crystal Cave was tricky in places but steady. Got a bit of beta on the crux from Dan but it was fairly obvious anyway, you can see the crux sloper from the cave. It gets steadily harder and would be a good 6c or 6c+ without the crux sequence. Only really one hard move to match the sloper - tricky to keep in balance but not particularly pumpy. Pleased to get it clean but don't think it's really 7a+, more like 7a. A few really good moves up the groove to get to a decent height, then it gets easier at a 'don't fall off' height. Didn't do the Cauldron section - one for next time! Went back to the gearing up ledge for a chat before carrying on. The second half had a very different atmosphere as there was no one else on it and it was in the shade. Several fairly hard sections up to 6c. For the final traverse onto the white ledge I remembered that the guide book said that some of it was over rock and I couldn't see how hard that section was, while the approach around the back of the zawn was pretty high and it wasn't clear how hard it would be to reverse, so decided to top out. Bad idea!!! The rock soon turned into a chossfest and I tried several different ways before eventually finding a just about non-lethal way to traverse off right and up. The guide book does say that swimming across the zawn isn't frowned upon so I'll give myself the tick! Had a look at the finish later and the bit above the rocks looks fairly easy. Mega!
