On Saturday 11th December, eighteen months after opening its doors to the public, The Depot Climbing Centre in Leeds staged its first major, all day bouldering competition.
An excellent turnout saw well over 100 competitors travel from all over the UK from as far South as Birmingham to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh in the North.
The whole event benefited from a fun, party style atmosphere, with DJ "Dangerous Dave" on the decks, homemade curry for all and Naylor's (a local brewer) Ale on tap.
Categories including (both male and female) juniors, seniors and veterans were all well attended, spurred on by a hefty prize fund of £500 cash (provided by Scarpa) to the winners as well as over £2500 worth of equipment prizes provided by event sponsors Outdoor Research, Grivel, Tendon Ropes , Beta Climbing Designs, BleauStone, NIHIL, prAna, Evolvand Metolius.
Qualifying ran from 11am to 5pm with competitors tackling 30 problems throughout the centre, ranging from V1 to the heady heights of V11. Juniors and Veterans were given their final rankings on this round alone whilst the Seniors went on to be separated out in a world cup format later in the evening.
Some very impressive performances were on show in all categories with some excellent displays of strength, technique and downright doggedness.
