Last weekend (21st - 22nd June), the annual British Bouldering Championships (BBC's) were held at The Climbing Works in Sheffield. In the men's category Dave Barrans successfully defended his title and once again became champion and in the women's category Michaela Tracy took the title for the first time.

The competition saw 53 male and 24 female competitors, who dealt with the technically devious problems on an extremely hot weekend giving sweaty conditions on the wall.

There were few surprises in the qualifiers or the semi-finals, with all the big names going through to the finals in both the men's and the women's categories. Soon it was time for the Finals which were to be held in the new international format with a male and a female competitor climbing at the same time.

With top female competitor Shauna Coxsey away in China for the World Cup (see UKC News), everyone was excited to see who would take the crown as the queen of British Bouldering. It was a tough competition with both Tara Hayes and Charlotte Garden looking strong, Michaela Tracy however, dominated the finals from very early on and very much deserved the win. Michaela commented on winning the BBC's on her blog:

"As much as I won a big bouldering competition this weekend, I wouldn’t like to call myself British Champion because I think it’s pretty clear who that is, and she isn’t here...

This is not the end goal, it’s just a step. Still it’s a pretty good one to be on."

The men's competition saw Dave Barrans very comfortably defend his title with Dave topping every problem, though Matt Cousins and Jon Partridge gave a close battle for 2nd and 3rd place.

  1. Michaela Tracy
