The second round of the IFSC Lead World Cup took place this weekend in Briançon, France. Local favourite Gautier Supper of France took his first Gold medal in a senior event and Korea's Jain Kim came back to her winning form after a disappointing first round in Chamonix last weekend.
There were no British competitors in this competition.
The semi-finals saw some usual suspects fail to make the finals, with Ramón Julian Puigblanque slipping off low down and finishing last in the round and Mina Markovic qualifying for the finals but sustaining an ankle injury whilst warming up for the semis. The decision was made not to climb in the finals to prevent any further injury before the next rounds.
Despite having competed for many years on the senior circuit and having won numerous medals at junior level, Gautier Supper had never won a senior event. Qualifying in 1st place after the semis, the question was: could he maintain his form in the finals? He climbed calmly to take the lead over first-time medallist Minoru Nakano of Japan and Austria's Jakob Schubert. Gautier is now top of the leaderboard in the series ranking ahead of Adam Ondra and Jakob Schubert.
The women's final ended up as a 6 woman event, as Delaney Miller of the USA accidentally missed the second clip and was called down. Jain Kim put in a poised performance as ever, not quite managing to top out but just edging ahead of young climbers Jessica Pilz of Austria and Belgium's Anak Verhoeven. Anak has possibly the most consistent results of any competitor, having made every final in all 12 of the senior events she has competed in - all at the age of 19. Jain currently leads the series ranking ahead of Jessica Pilz and Mina Markovic.
The next round is in Imst, Austria on 31st July- 1st August.
