Statement of Youth is Forty - Revisiting the Classic RouteVideo

© Ben Pritchard

Forty years after making the first ascent, Ben Moon is back on Statement of Youth (8a), a route that not only represented the cutting edge in terms of difficulty at the time of its first ascent, but also marked the dawn of a new approach to the discipline of climbing in the UK as a whole.

The route was first climbed in the summer of 1984, with Ben just 18 years old at the time. In addition to being the second route in the country to be given the grade 8a, it was one of the first routes in the UK to be established as a sport route from its inception.

Having returned ten years ago to attempt the route at the age of 48, Ben made the trip over to Lower Pen Trwyn once more, to see how he fared at the age of 58.
