Pete Dawson has redpointed Pirmin Bertle's La Cabane Au Canada 9a at Rawyl in Switzerland's Valais canton, adding another hard line to his impressive British summer ticklist of Hubble 9a, Pilgrimage 8B+ and Sea of Tranquility 8c/c+.

Climbing with his brother, Luke, Pete headed out on a 3-week-long trip to the Alps. First stop was the Haut Val Durance near Briançon. Pete climbed the classic Face Bouc 8c in Ailefroide in three attempts and Deltaplane Man Direct 8c+ at Entraygues.

Next on the list was Rawyl in Switzerland, which boasts long, steep endurance climbs at high grades. Pete told UKC:

'We wanted to try new crags and this one sounded like it would have good conditions. I liked the crag as it felt exposed and adventurous being on the mountainside. We weren't wrong on the conditions, with super cold temperatures below 10 degrees. I got stuck into Cabane straight away.'

Pete had the goal of climbing his first 9a abroad in mind after sieging one in Spain over Christmas but coming away empty handed. He explained:

'This time I was determined not to let a route get the better of me. It's a 35 metre stamina climb mainly on crimps but with some slopers and it breaks down to about a 25 metre 8c route, then a bat-hang rest and then a 10m 8a+ route. The final 10 metres was the crux and came down to a reachy deadpoint to sloper. Doing this move was desperate from the floor.'

Comparing the line to the two 9as he has climbed previously, Pete added:

'The route felt easier than Rainshadow and Hubble due to not having as difficult a crux and felt similar to Pilgrimage. However, the conditions helped a lot. I always find climbing hard routes on a trip more difficult, though, as you have far less time and you can't train for the route.'
