Climbing Manager 

Overview

As well as a fantastic bouldering facility, Yonder houses a fully equipped co-working space, workshop, yoga studio, café and bar. A space for people to work, play, create, and unwind, providing a focal point for all aspects of the local community.

Yonder has four key business areas, Climbing, Workspace, Business Development and Customer Experience.  Each has its own manager which along with the Managing Director form the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). The SLT work together to make key decisions within the business and ensure all areas of Yonder are successful and working in synergy.

Role purpose 

As the Climbing manager at Yonder you will be responsible for developing and maintaining a market leading offering. 

You will develop strategies for improving the quality of our climbing product and be the driving force behind understanding customer needs, identifying areas for growth and development, implementing strategic initiatives to enhance our customers climbing experience. 

Your key responsibilities will include:

Climbing Centre Operations:

  • The overall performance and safety of the Climbing centre.
  • Developing and managing our coaches and our coaching offering.
  • Oversee our route setting to ensure our climbing offer is world-class and relevant to our customer base.
  • Alongside the SLT, oversee our Maintenance team to ensure areas of Yonder are safe and well presented
  • Monthly reporting on performance of the Climbing
  • Careful management and budgeting of costs, resources.
  • Ensuring all coaching policies and procedures are up-to-date, fit for purpose and adhered to
  • Support Event Coordination - Organise and promote climbing competitions, workshops, and special events to engage the climbing community and attract new participants
  • Support other Managers to ensure the SLT have a consistent voice on policies. 
  • Actively contribute to the SLT conversations and represent the climbing centre and its staff on the SLT

Climbing products

  • Work with coaches and climbers to create diverse, accessible and inclusive route setting programme
  • Course Design – Create, train, market and deliver a range of courses. Collaborating with coaches to create a diverse range of climbing courses that cater to various skill levels.
  • Delivery and Moderation  – Oversee quality delivery of the courses. Regularly monitor and feedback to the coaches on how they can improve their delivery.
  • Staff Training – Deliver and oversee the training process for new coaches. Organising shadowing and upskilling opportunities to improve their coaching skills. Continuous training to stay updated on industry trends as well as regular in-house workshops to share skills and create coaching products.
  • Increase in Participation - Analyse and enhance opportunities for expanding participation, such as schools, B2B, charities & community projects to expand the centre's reach and impact.
  • Oversee all booking related to our climbing and coaching, kids clubs and NICAS scheme.

Developing 

  • Updating and improving our policies and procedures and centre H&S
  • Improving our systems, checks and overall operations
  • Developing and improving our climbing centre offering and profitability
  • Develop and improve our in house Coaching, NICAS and partnerships with local schools and organisations 
  • Support the wider development of Yonder and its counterparts

Person Specification - Climbing Manager 

Essential: Knowledge, skills and experience 

  • Proven experience in the climbing industry, with a track record of driving improvements.
  • Experienced coach with relevant coaching qualifications.
  • Experience of working in a leadership team, able to contribute ideas effectively, constructively challenge others and support the consensus.
  • Commercially minded and customer focussed. Experience of meeting financial targets within relevant and transferrable industries.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with key stakeholders and professionally represent the company.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use data to identify trends, make decisions, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication

Desirable: Knowledge, skills and experience

  • First aid qualifications
  • Knowledge of entry systems, ideally RGP
  • Experience of running NICAS programs
  • Experience managing people
  • Foundation and Development coach qualifications
  • Experienced outdoor climber

Remuneration

£30 to £35k PA Dependent on experience

28 days paid holiday

Selection will be based on application and interview. Interviews will be informal and designed to get the best out of you. We will test the criteria listed in the requirements section.
