It was horrible to watch this massive fall from near the very top of the E5 section of White Wand. Dave broke his heel bone :(

Yep..it hurt..alot...despite all the pads! Good shot Nick - well captured...

I love the dynamism of all the spotters lurching forward - I can almost feel the moment - would have been a perfect shot if the guy falling was a little higher - but 5* none the less :o)

Great work by the spotting team - not a cup of tea or a roll-up in sight. :)

harness but no rope? why so?
JamieSparkes - 11/Dec/08
I think the plan was that Dave would solo up to the break (which is the end of the E5 bit?), then be thrown a rope + gear so he could lead the easier top section.
Nick Smith - Climbers - 11/Dec/08
Nick - yeah, I had planned to solo the lower section,, and see how the top section looked. Wearing the harness gave me the option of a rope and gear had I wanted it for the top section. It's academic now anyway, really :)

Youch! Get well soon. The photo is painful to look at once you know the back story. It looks like the main stack was missed too.
