Get the figure in the photo doing something, ie. chipping steps, jumping a crevasse, throwing a rope etc. Lead in lines also help as they take you into the photo. Great background in this pic but midday light so the overall image is a bit flat. also get figures to wear bright clothing. Look at climbing ads. they are never in black or dull colours. Hope that helps.

Er ... midday light? Have you looked at the shadows? And I'd rather photos didn't look like ads tbh.

Stunning

5 for moaning!
Owain - 02/Jul/11
Chap in the front is distracting. Even if he wasn't there a bright featureless expanse at the bottom of the composition is ugly - 1/5

I gave it a 1 for the moaning, but felt a real shit so I gave it a 4 instead !

anonymouse - strange how you can comment on other people's photos without taking the same risk yourself !

Sean - just wondering if you considered that maybe not everybody is aiming for a professional-level result?
gordoste - 03/Jul/11
Giving Sean the benefit of the doubt I presume he is trolling you! Lush picture.

In reply to 'gordoste' the Walrus was asking for advice in the forums on how to improve this photo!

I love it the way it is.

Interesting reading the comments - this photo makes me want to be there and therefore makes me want to give it a 5. Many of the posed photos of "hard" rock climbs in uninspiring locations do not. Each to their own

sometimes people go to the mountains for the passion, the love or just the raw adventure, a photograph is just a way of documenting the adventure for our peers and future generations to enjoy and revel in ones achievment. Not everybody goes into the mountains just to get a good shot so everyone can rate them 5 on UKC!! you pompus tool!

Great picture. Especially good for me as you can see where my wife and I camped on our honeymoon! Unfortunately, bad weather the day we tried it stopped us getting to the top.

Great shot, hopefully more of these after Yanapacha... Dan

Happy man in pretty mountains! What more could you wish for?
mcdougal - 24/Jul/11
Well personally I think the photo is great just how it is. The person adds perspective to give a better impression of scale. The fact he's posing and smiling gives the photo its own mood and atmosphere (two friends enjoying a moment together) - having him 'doing something' would change the character of the photo entirely, some would say for the better, some would say for the worse. I think for the worse and this photo is great and can hold its own against any critique! Easy 5.

Oh come on, you're not supposed to be happy in the mountains........and if you are your should frown, or display steely eyed determination!
