It's about time I commented on one of your pics Jon - it's a great shot. Apart from the obvious, the trees in the foreground are beautiful and I'm surprised to see such fall colours in Chamonix.

Well well, this has never happened before! Thanks folks. Boje, I'm sure most climbers would be surprised by the autumn colours, as they tend to visit in summer when the larches blend in with all the other trees on the hillsides, especially when viewed from a distance. However, for three or four weeks in October/November, they put on a fabulous show. Maybe not as varied as broad leaf trees, but still very fiery.
Ironically, at the moment I was taking this shot, the two climbers who later perished in a storm on the summit of the Grandes Jorasses were just topping out on their route, The Shroud. From Chamonix there were absolutely no tell tale signs of the storm to come at all...
