An unusual perspective on an oft photographed route.
ChrisBrooke - 07/May/12
I was trying to avoid the usual shot but i guess the classic shots are classic because they're probably the best ! Also the T shirt is the wrong colour but by the time he got to here i couldn't very well tell him to go back down and change .Wasn't that happy with the results and tried it again from the big block and that was even worse , so bad i dare not even put it up for comment .
Nadir khan - 07/May/12
I'd have thought Colin would be able to hang on from the roof with one hand while changing t-shirts....

The difference in colour (the Tee shirt) leads the eye to the climber and point of focus so works very well. However, on a personal hobbyhorse of mine , the photo is upside down. Think about this. When you view the climber from above this is not how we see the image, and the eye is familiar with viewing the face the right way up. Having the picture upside down is like reading a paper reflected back to front and trying to make sense of the written word. Others on here will no doubt disagree...
Sean Kelly - 10/May/12
thanks for the comments Sean , the picture in fact isn't upside down , but the climber is about to set off on a horizontal(ish) roof . this is how the image was in camera , and how i composed the shot for the eye to be led to the top right quadrant of the frame . the eye naturally looks to the top right , if I turned the picture upside down as you suggest , the top right would be dead space and the picture would lose 90% of the tension/drama of the composition . but its all a matter of personal taste i suppose

I presume Sean knows the route, but having said that I don't see why he thinks it's upside down. I turned my laptop upside down and that I guess is what you would see if you were lying on the top of the cliff hanging over and looking - but the way it is is exactly how you would see it through your legs if hanging on an abseil. I presume that's how you took it Nadir?
I rather like it, although I find your mate's sunglasses oddly distracting in all these Roaches pics. Particularly as he is the shade here, it makes the pic look a bit like a modelling shot for the sunglasses which I'm sure it's not meant to be!
TobyA - 12/May/12
It wasn't a photoshoot for sunglasses company but now that you mention it , what a good idea : )
