Not yet done this but I didn't think it was supposed to be that steep either!
I think it's the wide angle that gives that impression. But you have to think, after years of taking disappointing climbing pics, have we just normalized the idea that photos fail to capture what it's really like to be there?
How wide is it Nadir - did you stitch images?

Hi Stone Muppet and thanks for the comments. Its a single image taken with a 17 mm on a full frame so fairly wide without getting into fisheye territory. The divergence of lines is accentuated with a wide angle lens but I was careful to check that the camera was representing the lines of both Gimmer String and 'the crack VS' on the L accurately. You can see the distortion of the valley floor from the angle of the river but to try and get the river and valley floor to look 'true' the climb would then be horribly inclined to look a lot less steep than it actually is. The 17mm is a great lens for climbing photography because it allows you to use so many lines as lead in lines and also create an unusual sense of perspective , ie, the climber and the drop to the bottom of the crag in the same frame . Hope you enjoy it when you climb it.

That is indeed pretty wide! Fair play both for the photo and for lugging a full frame camera up there :)
