Solo aid climber adfrift on the Nose of The Captain. They've just finished the Great Roof Pitch and are hauling the Pig. Taken from the Meadow. Shot used on the front cover of BMC Summit 46.

Chris - Was this the 100-400 with converter combination you've talked about before?
london_huddy - 03/Sep/07
Hi Hindu. Yep 100-400 with 1.4x teleconv. Used tripod and the lens has IS, which both helped.
ChrisJD - 03/Sep/07
Cheers - Looks cracking, US catalogue cover material if I saw it.

I remember seeing this on the front cover of Summit and being suitably stunned then - the scale of it is just mind blowing.

The cool thing is you can actually see the climber on the high res verion of this: http://www.ukclimbing.com/images/dbpage.html?id=57634

Lovely light to bring out the detail Chris

I see it! but I just don't see how it's No 1!! Gotta be the WORST No 1 i've seen!!!
Padraig - 09/Sep/07
Love the solitude this photo shows. If you can't look at this photo and the full one of El Cap and see how amazing it is then there's something wrong with you.
TimS - 09/Sep/07
Hey Padraig. Having interacted with you before on UKC I know your opinion is actually worth diddly squat. Looks like UKC agree. Have a nice day.
ChrisJD - 09/Sep/07
Im with Padraig, its a nice shot but the composition doesnt warrant #1. It looks as though anyone could have took it. US catalogue material, I think not!

Well it's already made the front cover of BMC Summit 46 and was very well received (as it has been on UKC). Can't please everyone I suppose. And the point of photography is that "anyone" can take great shots, so don't understand your comment.

Fantastic shot

Nothing personal Chris! You have some really awesome photos in your gallery - I just dont think this one is one of the best
antpayne2003 - 13/Sep/07
'Twas not Chris' fault that people think it is a good photo, he just submitted it, and we voted.

I think this is a pretty stunning pic. I love the way that the features on the rock are almost scale indpendent - it could be any size until you see the climber - then you realise its huge and at the same time (s)he looks very lonely! Nice one mate
johnhowell - 19/Sep/07
I neither know nor care about the technical merits of this photo - it's just a brilliant subject and it evokes such a sense of scale, solitude and self dependence (even though the Valley was probably crawling with folk!). Excellent.
