"The Great Northern Prow of Mount Roraima is like something from fantasy" - Leo Houlding

Featuring climbers Leo Houlding and Anna Taylor and presented by Berghaus, 'House of the Gods' is a Coldhouse Collective production, and tells the story of an expedition to the iconic prow of Mount Roraima deep in the Amazon rainforest. At the heart of the film is the developing relationship between the climbers and their indigenous guides, which had a profound impact on the final phase of the expedition. House of the Gods is now available to buy or rent on Prime Video in the UK and over 80 other countries.

In late 2019, Leo Houlding led a team of climbers to attempt a new route on the prow of Mount Roraima in Guyana, in the Amazon rainforest. The location was the real-world inspiration behind Arthur Conan Doyle's literary classic The Lost World, and Disney/Pixar animated epic Up. On the team, and on her first big wall expedition, was young Cumbrian climber, and fellow Berghaus athlete, Anna Taylor. The core group was completed by Waldo Etherington, Wilson Cutbirth, Dan Howard and Matt Pycroft of Coldhouse Collective. Leo, Anna and the crew were guided through 100km of untracked jungle to reach Roraima by Edward, Troy and other members of the local Akawaio people.

House of the Gods tells the story of how the Akawaio enabled the climbers to reach the base of the wall, who then in turn enabled the Edward and Troy to climb the great Northern Prow, becoming the first Guyanese to do so, and gaining national acclaim and honours for both men.

Matt Pycroft photographed and filmed progress throughout the expedition, and he and the Coldhouse Collective team produced the film that documents the adventure. House of the Gods had its world premiere at Kendal Mountain Festival in November 2021, after which it toured other international film festivals and won numerous awards, including - Best Mountain Sport Film at Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, the Grand Prize at New Zealand Mountain Film Festival, Best Climbing Film at Mezinárodní horolezecký filmový festival (MHFF) in Czechia, and Best Film About Adventure and Exploration at Ladek Mountain Festival in Poland.

Leo Houlding comments: "The Great Northern Prow of Mount Roraima is like something from fantasy - so massive, spectacular and hard to reach. A dozen 2,000ft waterfalls cascade from the bow of a great ship that soars for over a mile above the Amazon basin. Having done a lot of big trips, I thought this time it would be cool to try something different, to share the journey and some of the stuff I've learned with a more diverse, younger crew and give the locals, without whom we could never have reached the foot of the wall, the opportunity to climb their sacred peak. It was a complex mission, but one of the most rewarding yet."

The Vancouver jury stated: "In this film the director captures the team's arduous journey both to and up a remote and almost mythical objective. In difficult-to-film conditions we observe the characters at their physical and mental limits as they seek to break free from the squalor that surrounds them. Through the Director's lightness of touch, Edward and Troy add local knowledge, culture and strength to allow this epic adventure, described by as the ultimate in masochism by the first ascensionists, to succeed. With this film you feel the struggles. You live the adventure; not only through the pictures and words but also through its evocative soundtrack."

The film is now available in high definition for rent (£4.49) or purchase (£9.99) on Prime Video - Watch House of the Gods | Prime Video (amazon.co.uk).
