Sci-fi, fantasy book ideas please.

I have read the Brent Weeks trilogy and really enjoyed this very dark series. A few other authors to save you some time, include David Gemmell, Harry Harrison, Iain Banks, Richard Morgan, Robert Jordan, George Martin, Brandon Sanderson to name a few.

Anything dark and gritty...

Perdido Street Station by China Mieville is amazing. Very dark and superbly written.

In reply to climbingpixie: Walter Mosley. Try 'Blue Light' (sci-fi) and 'The Man in my Basement')not sci-fi but a cracking read) for starters.

In reply to riddle:

Ursula le Guin, The Dispossessed and the Left Hand of Darkness. Both superb, but I'd rate the former a bit ahead of the latter.

His other Bas Lag stories are great too - plots are linked but all the books are stand alone - The Scar (my favorite of the three) and Iron Council.

Joe Abercrombie is pretty good, been mentioned on here quite a bit recently, I prefer his The Third Law trilogy, but his other books are worth a read too.

I remember enjoying The Sword of Albion by Mark Chadbourn, but cannot remember anything more about it than that!
