Simple one here. Following a conversation with some mates at the weekend the topic of funniest film of all time came up. Now obviously there was no clear answer but it got me thinking. So what in your opinion is the funniest film of all time?

Depends on what mood I'm in. Right now Monty Python and the Holy Grail or Withnail and I, but that could change any second.

For real belly laughs a lot of the silent movies were absolute crackers. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy's early work is cracking as is loads of Chaplin'c stuff.

Unfortunately in these days of special effects "mere" slapstick genius doesn't get a look in.

In reply to Dom Whillans: my favorite is the fancy dress party with the sergeants are dressed as a zebra. The Zebra proceeds to drink the punch and Peter Sellers pipes up " I will take your stripes ". Then a car chase ensues with a gorilla driving a jeep, followed by a knight and zebra all to the amusement of a local sat outside a bar. That good i have put it on now !!

"I will have your stripes for this" - to the zebra, as above
"Does your dog bite?" and the ensuing set-up ("but that is not my dog")
"Sir Hugh Panther, the notorious Pink Lytton"
And Dreyfus spinning his globe in his ofice, cutting the end off his finger in his cigar cutter, the very non-PC Cato quotes ("not now Cato you yellow fool!"). The cod accent remains brilliant and Sellers a troubled genius - especially dismounting from the parallel bars straight down the stairwell....

Another vote for A Shot in the Dark then oh, and Life of Brian, too

Chevy Chase when he plays the Invisible man can't remember the name of film.
Finally George Forby and that other guy what's his name, older films, in one film (black and white) he tries to join the police force but is not tall enough but ends up impersonating one, in another film colour this time he's a milk man with Horse and cart struggling against a bigger corporation that's trying to put him out of business,in that film shouting "Mr pipkin, Mr Pipkin" . Can anyone remember his name(early morning brain mist).

Think he is still alive to this day! Very funny guy, memories of watching norman Wisdom films on Saturday afternoons after the wrestling......
(and Harold Lloyd, Lorel and Hardy, St Trinians, Abbot and Costello etc etc)
PS
Don't think it was 'Mr pipkin' think it was 'Mr Grimsdale'. always the same set up in every film though eh - Mr Grimsdale was always some sort of authority in Normans life and as you say, when he panicked it was always - "Mr Grimsdale, Mr Grimsdale...."
Happy daze!

Airplane is the only one I had to watch at least once again. I laughed so much the first time I missed half of it, and was told to shut up as nobody else could hear the dialogue.

Peter Sellers films usually made me laugh, Mel Brookes has the odd moment but not my style.

Lots more have been funny, a lot mentioned on this thread.
