As well as the music and films he seems to have been a thoroughly decent man.

Indeed, 10-4.

I've been a fan of country music since around 1967, and a fan of the older music going way back. Hank Williams was my dad's favourite, it was often on the record player in our cooncil hoose in Glasgow. Scotland, particularly the W coast, has always had an affinity with this music.

I don't want to denigrate KK, but the hagiography you posted seems a bit over the top. He was good, but not THAT good. He was far and away from being the 1st outlaw country singer, and not the 1st to cover the subjects you talk about.

That first piece is rather over the top but I’m not sure if there’s much point in arguing about who was the first outlaw country performer. Too many issues around genre boundaries and the like.

I am happy to talk about country music for as long as you like - including, of course, the 'Hillbilly Shakespeare' - but we should probably start a separate thread for any of that.

I will just mention that the author of https://savingcountrymusic.com/ is a very astute observer of the country music scene. You might not agree with everything he writes - but he is always worth reading.

Back to Kris Kristofferson: I saw him play at the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, in the early or mid 2010s. I was delighted to finally get to see him play, but his performance that night seemed somewhat distracted - and we all wondered whether or not something was wrong. Fairly shortly after that, he was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. That explained the problems he'd been having, and the treatment he then received helped him get back to normal. See, for example, https://www.today.com/health/news/kris-kristofferson-health-rcna173247 for some more discussion about that.

He was the improbable star of one of my favourite films of all time - Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

Improbable because he was in his 30s playing the Kid who died in his early 20s. But he bought a real elegiac air to the role, totally in keeping with the film's theme.
