Just been looking at the Face West website and saw that someone on there has posted a list of the clothes he wears for Scottish Winter climbing, my list would look like this...

Thermal boxer shorts, Buffalo Techlite Slapperpets, Mardale pertex/ pile shirt, Buffalo Belay Jacket, Beenie, Microfleece gloves, waterproof shell gloves.

or sometimes...

Thermal longjohns, thermal vest, powerstretch tights, shelled micropile top, fleece, goretex jacket, goretex slapperpets, headband, micropile gloves, waterproof shell gloves.

So (my lovely fellow gear freaks) what do you wear?
In reply to That Oceanic Feeling: Undies of no particular sort, smartwool thermal top, schoeller trews, Rav VR trail smock, gtex jaykit and salops. Mountain Hardwear belay jacket for hanging around getting cold. Usually take 2 hats - one for under my helmet, one for walk in/out which is also spare, a thin set of gloves for walk in, a decent set to climb in, and buffalo mitts in the bottom of the sack for really shite weather.
In reply to That Oceanic Feeling:
on top i have:
icebreaker skin 200
berghaus extrem light mid-weight thermal
sprayway softshell
and a goretex in my pack for when it rains

on the bottom i have:
running tights
mtn hardwear fleece lined tights

They're what I wrap around my legs when I'm cold. Anyway back to the lists, I think they're quite useful in a public information sort of a way...

I got mine at Snow and Rock - about a tenner

My list goes:

Smartwool top for walk-in
Patagonia Zephur jacket (like driclime)
Patagonia Speed Ascent Jacket
Cloudveil Enclosure Jacket for belays

Loads of different gloves, they'll all get wet anyway!
yellofello 05 Jan 2007
With the current weather...shorts, t shirt and flip flops would be suffice.
 CJD 05 Jan 2007
In reply to That Oceanic Feeling:

helly top
lightweight fleece (though this year it might be a VR thingy)
goretex

powerstretch tights
salopette thingys

big socks

Forget about sil inner gloves...you can now get merino wool inner gloves.

And as we all know...merino really is the dogs danglies.
 chris_s 05 Jan 2007
In reply to That Oceanic Feeling:

R1 top, dimension jacket and some patagonia softshell trousers I picked up in TK Maxx. Mammut stratus belay jacket and precip waterproofs if it looks like rain.
Thin gloves, thick gloves, sometimes mitts, hat and polar buff. No slapperpets.

In reply to yellofello:

I think you'll find that Merino comes from a Sheep's danglies. Har har.
In reply to CJD:

No descripton of your underwear CJD? Frankly we're disapointed.

Moving on,

thus far there seems to be a strong showing for shelled pile tops, goretex and synthetic belay jackets.
 CJD 05 Jan 2007
In reply to That Oceanic Feeling:

ha ha.

okay...

er...

black pants

bra-thing.

better?
In reply to CJD:

Black pants? You weren't cut out to be a gear freak were you? We're not excited by knowing what colour they are, we wanted to hear that they had a North Face logo on them
 CJD 05 Jan 2007
In reply to That Oceanic Feeling:

lol, oh, they're like capilene ones but I think they're playtex.
 CJD 05 Jan 2007
In reply to CJD:

and more to the point

goretex - half price in a sale
VR top - half price in TK Maxx
helly - present
powerstretch tights - handmedown from a friend
salopettes - annexed from ex

nice

cheapskate gear rules!
In reply to CJD:

Should've gone for silk, practical and alluring.

In reply to That Oceanic Feeling:

On Tuesday, I wore a Berghaus Xstatic top, a Montane Zero jacket, a Rab VT smock, LA long johns, NF softshell tousers, Dachstein mitts. When I roped up I swapped my baseball cap for a balaclava. When it started to rain on the way down, I put my ME waterproof jacket on. I had no spare gloves/mitts or anything else.
 matt22 06 Jan 2007
In reply to That Oceanic Feeling: My list would be very similar to yours, but i've noticed everbody seems to wear gortex waterproofs. I used a Cioch jacket which is very similar to paramo which uses nikwax anology fabric, i found it far exceeds gortex, any views on this?

In reply to That Oceanic Feeling:

Ultimately depends on the weather, particularly the wind, but for a fairly still and cold day -

For the walk-in:

Lightweight thermal top - will carry spare to change into near foot of route.
Ron hills or some similarly light trousers

On the route:

Long sleeved midweight thermal top
Buffalo or similar
Lined salopettes, I have some Paramo salopettes to try this winter so will see how they go.

Add in socks, gloves, hats in various mixes. Ideally depending on conditions, usually just what I can find out of the storage!

Effectively you have two different activities - a continuous effort in getting to the crag and a stop-start effort when climbing so one system will struggle to cope with both.

In reply to matt22:
Paramo salopettes and jacket, with base layer long-johns and top. Rab VR for if it's very cold and belay jacket for if it's ever very, very cold (hasn't had much use)
Paramo is excellent and I can't see myself going back to hard shell waterproofs in the winter time.
I'm curious about that ventile cotton stuff though.

And Rohan do some great boxer shorts.

In reply to That Oceanic Feeling:

My god, you would think it was cold, lol

For the walk in:
underwear just normal type
Base Layer (bottoms and top)
Salopettes the trouser type not the one with the chest bib
sometimes a light fleece with a very thin Marmmot waterproof if its raining.
Gloves are just £8 Extremitie fleece things not water proof or anything like that Dont usualy wear the gloves if I'm walking as I get too hot nor do I wear a hat. (The secret is to carry three pairs, 1 for the walk in, 1 for the climb and 1 for the walk out)

For the climb:
Same as above but add a second fleece jacket. If all I am doing is belaying then forget the second fleece and include a Berghaus Infinity jaket.
Balaclava (the type that covers the head, ears and under the chin not the mouth or nose..cant stand them, lol)

That does me...keeps me plenty warm even when I'm sitting still on belay ledges.

In reply to chris_s:
I'm looking for a belay jacket with hood and have seen some a n umber of likely models but how do you find your Mammut jkt as it seems heavier at 1kg than similar jackets such as TNF optimus redpoint and Rab Belay jkt - how warm is is and how small does it pack down to?
Cheers

In reply to Anonymous:

Oh forgot to add in winter I always carry a full Gortex jacket in my backpack just incase the wind picks up and the weather becomes wild.

Like in the Lakes the other day, claggy morning a bit of drizzle and a light breeze by the afternoon, visibilty down to less than 50m, driving rain and at times it was impossible to stand in exposed areas.
 Gareth James 06 Jan 2007
Helly Top
Marmot Driclime
Waterproof Jacket

(Put extra fleece under waterproof for route, and carry synthetic belay jacket)

Legs - Helly
Rab VR Pants
Marmot Precip Full Zip with cheap gaiters to prevent crampon holes.

Liner sock with a 4 season sock
Robert Lyons 06 Jan 2007
In reply to Gareth James:

Log sleeved merino top (either crew or zip neck)
Rab VR trail smock

Pants
Rab VR trail trails

Fleece hat and thin gloves

Carry a Rab belay jacket, ME paclite waterproofs, waterproof gloves and spare mittens (Dachstien or Buffalo)

 Erik B 06 Jan 2007
In reply to That Oceanic Feeling: forget goretex - its useless, Event is a million times better.
 TobyA 06 Jan 2007
In reply to That Oceanic Feeling: I haven't climbed in Scotland for about three years but I used to use:

-thin thermal top
-thin longjohns
-windshirt (works well over thermal top on walkins
-buffalo salopettes
-buffalo big face shirt with hood
-buffalo belay jacket with hood
-Old mitts for belays
-pair of sticky thickies over thinnies for climbing in.
-stretchy balaclava rolled into a hat
-gaiters

I was poor and the system was cheap. Now when I go ice climbing I have to decide which belay jacket to take, which softshell etc. Life used to be so much simpler when I couldn't afford to shop.

I love it - packs down into its chest pocket and is very light (mine doesn't weigh a kilo, so maybe they've beefed them up a bit?)

It's very warm and has pretty much replaced my twice as bulky cloudveil belay jacket. Make sure you get the hooded version though.
