Just dug out the classic Dury album "Brand new boot and panties". I haven't listened to this for years and forgot how good this guy really was. Am I looking at this album with rose tinted glasses or is Dury really that good?

In reply to Fly Fifer: He was good... but I wouldnt say a genius...

Side two of "Do It Yourself" is brilliant!
Once described to me by a first time listener as"Bob Marley and Madness on Speed!"

He was one of the wisest people that I can think of.
In reply to Fly Fifer: Not my cup of tea but a talent non the less

In reply to Fly Fifer: Talking to myself is never a good sign! I was probably refering to the way he managed to use certain obscure pieces of vocabulary in a way which never made you blink. The only other guy who does this so well is Tom waits! What has happened to innovative and original music or am I just a hopless nostalgic?

really?

In reply to Removed User:

For sure.

For example, check out the lyrics to Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, or Razzle in my Pocket, or You'll See Glimpses.

The devil is in the detail.

In reply to coinneach: There was a tribute album out after his death (Dury) with Mr McGowan himself uttering those immmortal lines......poetry indeed....something everyone should hear at least once.

New Boots and Panties is one of those superb albums, where every track is good.
OP Fly Fifer 05 Apr 2005
In reply to Erik B: Now LOL, although he stays just 3 miles down the road from me (Bloody Fifers indeed), I wouldn't even mention the inventively named "jukebox" in the same breath!

In reply to Fly Fifer: From 'Blockheads' - ' Imagine having one P@ssing in your swimming pool or banging nails in your big black knob'.
Not neccessarily genius but well observed. i always enjoyed his music mainly cos Norman Wattroy was the bass player.

Bloody hell. In a culture that extols the likes of Madonna, Coldplay, bleedin' Kaiser Chiefs and all the other latest big things, we're arguing the toss about Dury!? Do me a favour, the guy was a colossus..........

He was crap. Couldn't sing and wrote lyrics the Carry On team would have been proud of. Rose tinted wine bottle more like.
