Lots of foody threads around at the moment so if you can call tinned food 'food' here's another!

Predicable but I'll vote my fave tinned food the humble Heinz beans. Yep, the staple diet of council estates countrywide the old blue and black tins find their way into my trolly too. I find toast a bit dry in the moning so half a tin of beans and 2 toast sets me up nicely and no matter how posh you are, who can't resist homemade chips, egg and beans?
I've defected now and moved to the 'fridge pack' Heinz has bought out. Only use what I want, no tin opener req and the container once washed makes a great storage pot for the shed <nails/screws etc>

Worst? My Nana used to buy tined brussel sprouts, f**king rank they were and it was the main reason I avoided going round for sunday dinner! They had the texure and taste of snot marinaded in sea water and believe me I know what that tastes like....

Come on then, who avoids / makes a bee-line for the tin asile???
In reply to blanchie14c:

Strangely, I love tinned ravioli, cold and straight out of the tin

Tinned asparagus is just wrong and why anyone would prefer the bleached, wobbly tinned version over a fresh crunchy sprig dowsed with hot butter and a grind of black pepper escapes me.

In reply to blanchie14c:
Agree with yer beans and add rice pudding or custard [to the list, not the means]. Pulses in cans are fantastic: think how much soaking and arsing about it saves!
worst? peas; macaroni cheese. I didn't know you could get tinned sprouts. That is so very, very unacceptable .
 spacey 12 May 2011
In reply to blanchie14c:

Rice pudding is top dog for me. Cold straight from the tin of course. But I do love beans as well, although I have deffected to Branston beans from Heinz.

Worst. Potatoes are pretty bad. Can't understand the need, you can get potatoes all year round so why get them in a tin.
 SCC 12 May 2011
In reply to blanchie14c:

Worst - most vegetables. Tined carrots? Vile. Peas? Nasty - I don't even want to think about tinned sprouts.
Tinned sweetcorn is ok though.

Guilty pleasure has to be a tin of Stag Chilli.

In reply to blanchie14c:

My cupboard is always stocked with tinned tuna, baked beans and kidney beans.

I had mac and cheese from a tin once - it was disgusting.

My old housemate used to buy tinned pea's, I never understood it, they tasted horrible, were more expensive and less flexible in their portion size than frozen - I mean why would you buy veg by the tin??

Some meals in a tin are better than they have any right to be though.
 owlart 12 May 2011
In reply to blanchie14c: I'll see your Heinz Beanz and raise you Heinz Beanz & Sausages! I much prefer to have those rather than just beans on my toast. I also have tins of chopped tomatoes and rice pudding in my cupboard (that's two tins, not one disgusting mix!).
In reply to blanchie14c:
another vote for mac cheese in a tin as the worst, tried it at college it was yuck, also tried cheese sauce like a gravey mix to put on pasta but that was bad as well, gave up trying to eat it till I came home to a proper kitchen.

Beans of course in a tin are good as is tuna, people are saying veg in a tin is bad what about fruit, quite like tined rasberries when cant get fresh.
 kathrync 12 May 2011
In reply to blanchie14c:

Worst has to be tinned mushrooms....bleugh!

Love tinned peaches and tinned clementines though
In reply to kathrync:
Oh I dont know I use a tin of creamed mushrooms in my chicken and ham pie, its yummy.
In reply to blanchie14c: Another vote for rice pudding. Also Stagg chilli is very acceptable; not as good as home made of course, but damn fine for a tinned chilli.

In reply to Hannah S: Yes, tinned fruit is good. I like tinned pears or peaches. Fruit Cocktail is ok (spot the one glace cherry in there) with yogurt. I had tinned strawberries once, not again, though I guess they'd be ok for cooking, pie filling. Tinned tuna is also good.
In reply to owlart:
how could I forget tomatoes, I always have plum ones thou then can take the stalk and crap bits out before chopping, I dont like tomatoes raw bit will happily have tined ones on cheese tomatoe and onion toasties.

This was my first thought for worst thing in a tin. Thankfully we were never much of a tin household apart from the usual staples. I agree with the OP beans as best.
Wonko The Sane 12 May 2011
In reply to blanchie14c: Fray Bentos Steak and kidney pie (or Pov pie as my GF used to call it) is a fave. I always have one to hand for when nothing else will do. Less frequent is the craving for Stagg chilli. Stagg chilli has special vitamins and minerals only found inside their tins. Probably.
OP wilkie14c 12 May 2011
In reply to owlart:
Beans and sausage - the campsite special! I've seen beans and 'burger bites' - f**k knows what they are?!
The only vegatalbe we have in tins are mushy peas for an occasional fish chips and peas day and the mandatory kindney beans for the chilli. We have a few fruits, mandorins and peaches, Mrs B's lad really like tinned fruit (?)
Here a task for you when doing your 'big shop', see if you can find the tins of fried onions! Was in Asda last week and saw these, just how lazy are people? Onions are what, 20p each?
 Al Evans 12 May 2011
In reply to Tyroneslater: What I've never understood is why tinned food is not better than it is? I don't mean things like beans or peas or fruit. But why aren't there any decent tinned meals, like Irish Stew or Beef Bourginion, or even a decent curry?
OP wilkie14c 12 May 2011

Oh, chopped tomatoes obviously. Where would we be without them eh

Al, you obviously can't get Cambells all day breakfast <in a tin> in spain then eh?!
 owlart 12 May 2011

Worst : pies (eg Fray Bentos)

In reply to blanchie14c:
The best: Condensed milk. I only ever use it when cooking, but it is so good. Chick peas - each pea contains 30cc of compressed air, hours of fun. Ambrosia rice pudding. I had their creamed macaroni once, that was just wrong.

Worst: Has got to be tuna. Ecological destruction and rape of the oceans in a handy, convenient can. <ooh controversial>

Having said which, they tin some soups excellently, Heinz cream of tomato is the best soup ever if you are in the right mood for it.

In reply to blanchie14c: Those Fray Bentos pies should be against the law, I'd rather go hungry! Best tinned food? Smoked oysters, not very common though but smoked mussels are a close second, on a cracker with a slice of tomato and tabasco, mmmmmmm....

Now not knocking the chinese but what the f**k were they thinking when they tried that for the fist time?

Not a fan of sweetcorn but caught some massive carp and tech on the stuff, the fish love it.

In reply to Jon Greengrass: Asda sells full English in a tin, that's gotta be up there! And I tried a mixed beans, bacon and rice thing in France, that was friggin gruesome! Had one taste, chucked the rest away.

Beans are always gold, tho! And chopped tomatoes, maybe not on its own but I can't think of many dishes that wouldn't be improved with the addition of a tin of chopped tomatoes.

I probably agree that baked beans can't be beaten, you certainly can't reproduce them - I've tried. But it's a rare week that I don't use a couple of tins of tomatoes. Using fresh tomatoes to make a sauce is such a faff.

Never managed to make rice pudding that was anything like as good as ambrosia either.

In reply to stonemaster: ?!?! How? are you allergic to tomatoes..or did you forget to take it out of the tin?

F&B pies are [were] fantastic for camping....chuck 'em in the fire, free razor sharp fiisbee after...and you can use it as a dish...

tinned cherries & mango, good points

Corned beef?

I've got a real craving for corned beef hash, spam fritters and corned beef & mustard sandwiches now, you gits.....

Somebody just bruised my young brother Jim,
They only went and threw tomatoes at him!
Tomatoes are soft and don't harm the skin
But these ones did; they were still in a tin

Tinned 4 bean mixes are great for chillis and other mexican style foods.

The other weekend when we were camping we used tinned ratatouie mix with our pasta (along with some paste stuff). Was really, really good. Think that came from Morrisons.

Wonko The Sane 12 May 2011

Well they only require warming up not 'cooking' so good for camping where you want quick food and not have to cook for ages, also good for me with only a microwave at work and fancy something other than KFC! TBH though I go for smash everytime only resorting to golf balls when I have too and even then I must be desperate!

Corned beef:
Handy in a cupboard for unplanneded meals. Nice under the cheese on cheese on toast, nice mashed into mash potato, fridge it the night before if you intent to slice it for butties etc

I was munching away thinking how nice it was until I looked down and noticed a tiny but perfect little vertebrae sitting on a lettuce leaf. My initial reaction was COOL! I pushed it to one side and continued on my mastication when I noticed a second vertebrae...ok, not so great, oh, there's a third....fourth....fifth....and now the salad is in the bin. I remember eating tinned salmon at my Grandmother's house as a child and having exactly this experience. It wasn't seeing the vertebrae that freaked me out, it was the texture of them if you got one in your mouth accidentally and bit it...urgh! Haven't eaten tinned salmon since, although I am a big fan of tinned mackeral.

I was looking for alternative camp food the other day and came across Thai Green Chicken Curry in a tin in Asda. Took a gamble and it was really good so that's one for you to look out for! I also love chicken in white sauce, I have it with pasta usually... chuck in some veg, like peppers or sweetcorn, some mushrooms, some herbs or worcester sauce and that's really tasty. Other staples in my cupboard are heinz steamed puddings, tuna, tomatoes and beans. That's about it though. You can keep your corned beef and pilchards! Co:
