I've got some that are 40 years old and I'd have no hesitaion to use them, I do for work on buildings regularly... as long as they have been stored out of sunlight I don't think there is any scientific reason to believe they lose their strength.
In reply to anomm: i mainly use old ones for attaching things like drill and glue gun to me whilst bolting. Hundreds of household uses. As well as keeping gear organised. Keeping bunches of harnesses or helmets together for work.
