Baby is due in 6 days time, or earlier/later, obviously I am grounded currently. How long before your wife/partner/girlfriend let you out on the rock again? I am counting on about 4 weeks. In the meantime what the heck am I going to do?

In reply to PDL:

A quick trip out in a week may be ok, after that you may be too knackered to do anything other than say yes dear when you have to get up in the night with a yowling infant.

At least that is what I was told.

Mate..you're going to be too knackered for the first few weeks to think straight , nevermind climb..sorry but...tis true

In reply to PDL:
You'll both be tired for the first few weeks what with all the waking up in the night and stuff. So get in her good books by doing household chores, buying chocs, offering to help a lot. Then buy your self a boulder mat and get out for an hour or two when they are both asleep and you have accumulated enough points for being good / helpful. Your lead grade will drop anyway, so you may as well make up for it by bouldering.

In reply to PDL: Is she a climber too? She may want to get back to climbing/drinking/shopping etc as soon as possible too you know! I feel for her if she's a climber.....

I have taken her indoors a couple of times plus she likes walking and camping but no she's not a climber.

Take the advice of the advert and "Phone in sick."

In reply to PDL: Could she be interested? Or could she be interested in a day out with other families (very near climbable rock of course!)?

In reply to PDL:

My first was by Caesarian and I was told not to climb or drive for six weeks (or was it three months; I can't remember now)
Anyway, whatever it was it was intolerable, and two weeks after the birth I was at my local wall, climbing carefully and responsibly, and driving too.
However, there were lots of times when the baby was young when I seriously suffered from adrenaline deprivation. So what I did (I know this is weird) is navigation practise in the woods in the dark. I recommend that as wildly exciting and vaguely relevant to climbing.

I have been at crag with friends who were out climbing after about 3 weeks - having 3 of us meant one of the parents could "rotate"

In reply to AlH: Congrats Al, I'd heard things were imminent from the Ginger Prince.

Glad you're all doing well.

Who's going to drive you to the crag though???

Normal life is over.

The persistent noise in the background is the sound of lots of doors closing.

Give it few days and you'll be out.

In reply to PDL:

Do you need to be grounded now?

My wife's due yesterday and I'm planning on climbing tuesday night unless things start moving! Sitting around waiting will make the wait longer.

Good luck!
OP PDL 28 Jul 2008
In reply to Swig:
Not exactly, but I grounded myself in reality as the nearest Grit crags are one hours drive away (Wilton or Castle Naze) and the wife is getting jumpy about me being too far away, first child and all that.

However, I am going to Pex tonight & maybe Helsby tomorrow (which are both only 20 mins away when I think about it).

It's first for me too. I make sure I've got phone reception.

I've got one coming in October. I've budgeted not to be climbing Sept until spring!
 AlH 28 Jul 2008
In reply to PDL: Many thanks and here is wishing you all the best for both our impending arrival and your not too delayed to the climbing.

In reply to PDL:

If the crag is a short drive away (ie. if you lived in Sheffield) then you could easily pop put for a bit after a week or two if you're not too knackered. I was very tired for 4 weeks after our girl was bored, and she's an angel!

If you're a hour or more away from a crag I would wait a month before going climbing.

Always keep your phone on ya so you can hear if you're needed. And earn those brownie points before having in leisure time yourself!

Thanks Jus thats about what I was thinking.
