Lost toenail and climbing shoes?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, it is partly climbing, partly gear and partly podiatry!

My toenail fell off about a month ago (after some over-zealous crampon placement in hard ice) and I've been climbing with my mini-nail since then.

My question is, will it grow back ok while wearing tight rockshoes? It doesn't hurt anymore than my other toes when climbing but I'm worried it's going to go ingrown or just be generally buggered up for life.

Any thouughts?

It will do what it is going to do. As long as no damage occured to the growth plate, and you dont mess, it should be o.k. But the rock boots should not really alter the outcome by much.

I lost a toe nail after a marathon about a year ago. I went rock climbing about three times a week after that and there were no problems at all.
In reply to Alasdair Fulton:

I had one that started to dig in as it grew back, but I found I could prise it out with some tweezers and it was OK as long as long as I checked it every day.

In reply to Alasdair Fulton: My big toenails came off a while ago due to gnarly (or just bad, as you wish!) skiing at christmas time. I've been climbing recently on medium nails and don't think rock shoes are making them worse. If anything it also has a sort of prising out effect. I live in constant fear of some sort of mobility reducing situation where I have to admit to people that I cannot walk properly etc due to my manky toenails...

do you mean like making the nail come away from the toe?
In reply to All:

I could post some nice pictures of it for you if you want ;@)

> I had one that started to dig in as it grew back,

Many, many years ago when I was young and fit I used to do lots of kickboxing. Once I had a minor accident at the gym and my big toe got some damage. But I was young and brave (stupid) so I didn't care. After the training session I noticed that the toe nail was damaged. I didn't care.

After few weeks the pain got too strong and a young, brave man had to call the doctor. First thing the doctor said was "I bet this has been hurting for a while. Am I right?" Yes he was The toe nail had been cut half and the other half had started to grow _inside_ the toe. It looked quite bad even for the young brave man.

Then the fun began. Doctor said that this might hurt a bit. It's always a bad sign when a nice doctor says that this might hurt a bit I said that it must be painful when you'll pull that toe nail out. Doctor said that's not painful, you won't feel anything. But to get to that stage I have to use local anesthesia. At that point I saw the needle.

I suddenly remembered all the movies where those nice guys will ask questions when your finger nails are full of needles.

Man, it did hurt when he gave me that anesthesia. It did hurt a lot. After that experience I did pay quite a lot attention to my toe nails after any impact

In reply to Psychopathic_Barbie: no, I only saw a little bit of that, which one was he? Did he have bad toenails? I was kind of disappointed by the show since I didn't think they were all that geeky really, and since its only 8ish and I'm about to finish my quite exciting work as a physicist for the day and go and do some other well rounded type activities, neither am I obviously...

I've lost quite a few toenails due to tight rock shoes and toenails too long when frontpointing ( painful way to do it, that one). They've always grown back. Keeping them very short helps them not to come off.

Just to add to the thread, if you do damage your toenail you can get a lovely infection under the nail which lifts it off the nail bed. If that does happen bathe your feet in hypertonic salt water (hot) every day. Did wonders for my toes when they got manky after I dropped a belay bag on my foot...

I don't think I'd ever experience that injury - I can't even lift them up!
