Just found this on the Arrochar, Tarbet & Ardlui Heritage website, a film by Ben Humble showing Jock Nimlin & others climbing on The Cobbler in 1948.
There are some other interesting video clips on the site too.

Ok, I'm heading back there on 28th from down south, then back to Aberdeen on 29th. So it will probably rain

Really cool clip. The guy with the pipe reminded me of Harry Enfield's Mr. Cholmondley Warner
In reply to Mike C:

What a brilliant link; thanks for that. Interesting to find out more about Ben Humble too. I've seen the alpine flower trail that's dedicated to him in the Cairngorms and wondered who he was.
Wish I had a name that sounds like a Scottish mountain.

I think I have his On Scottish hills book, swap it for Brenva next time I see you?
Hmm, heard of doing the Grahams & Marilyns, how about doing the Alisons?

Classic, cheers for that!

Did you see the close ups of the overhanging arete of Dalriada towards the end? Past and present all in one shot.

Gotta love the pipe smokin' too

Hi - I am the web site developer for the Arrochar Heritage site. I've put lots of interesting Arrochar and Cobbler including a video of ladies climbing the Cobbler in 1958. I've also added one of Ben Humbles books discussing climbing routes amongst other stuff.
Take a look at www.arrocharheritage.com - in the local history menu you'll see the videos of Arrochar climbing and Arrochar & District A Complete Guide (by Ben Humble)

Cheers

Hi Flicka,

The video is a simple Windows Media file - your browser should be able to play it. It you get any messages about loading components to play it you may need to click yes....
Sometimes XP gets a bit over zealous in it's security.

Hi Davie,

I live in Arrochar and our house overlooks it - and I still haven't got round to climbing it yet!!!

www.cruachanscotland.co.uk is our house and B&B
In reply to Howard Page:

I can't get it to play, either; I get asked for my proxy server login (pop-up 'Enter Network Password'). And, when I enter these details, the pop-up re-appears every time.

This doesn't happen with uTube, or other video sources, so it looks to me as if there's something odd going on.

Hi Howard
I found your website courtesy of my girlfriend, Lesley F, who stays at Inveruglas & was looking for info on the history of her house (built for the managers building the Loch Sloy Dam). Fabulous stuff on the site, great to get the old videos on it too.
I enjoyed looking through the Arrochar guide of Ben Humble's.
It would be great if you could find a way of getting the videos accessible to those who couldn't view them. I had no trouble using Windows XP Media edition. There is a massive store of knowledge on this site, get their help with this perhaps?
Meet you for a pint in The Village Inn some time maybe?

In reply to Doug: Doesn't work with Safari on my Mac. Normally WIndows media files play in a separate window - nothing happens when I enter the video pages on this site.
 Doug 07 Jul 2007
In reply to Martin W: Don't normally have problems with windows media files but do on the Arrochar site in both the browsers I have installed

Maybe the author will come back & comment

In reply to Doug:
I tried it in Opera, Firefox and Safari - wouldn't work. Finally, tried IE & it worked
