Any recommendations for beginner-friendy clubs in West Yorkshire?

Hello,

I've been wanting to get more into outdoor climbing after mostly climbing indoor (mainly bloundering) for about a year now. Can anyone recommend any active beginner-friendy clubs around the Bradford/Halifax area (happy to go further afield)?

I've recently been on an outdoor top roping course to get an idea on how to rig the anchors. Massively enjoyed climbing on rock but don't have anyone to partner with.

I'm also interested in moving towards being able to sport/trad climb, can these skills be learnt in any local club or would it be worth looking into a separate course?

Appreciate any advice.
Cheers,

Don't know about clubs around you.

Back in the day we just passed on our skills to those we climbed with. This is frequently still a way of getting into trad and sport.

Some people prefer an instructor. Which I can understand why as you know you're getting reliable info.

Good luck. Just remember safety is key.

It can seem hard getting into climbing, you have some  skills, but not quite enough, you need someone to climb with, but you know no one.
A club can be a great option, possibly go to your nearest climbing wall, and ask there as they probably have clubs that use them, particularly in the Winter, so they should have an idea of the more active clubs in your area. The more local you can keep it the better, because later on in makes it easier to find people to lift share with.
It may seem off putting if you look at club websites, as they will suggest they are not instructors and say something about going on a course to learn to climb, which can be a good plan, however you will find that the main thing to know is how to belay, if you can do that, people will climb with you.

Another approach you could try is posting in Lifts and Partners, asking for a mentor, or someone more experienced to take you out to show you the ropes so to speak. To this end, filling out your UKC profile could help with this.

Something to be aware of is UKC seems to have a problem with “bots” setting up profiles, so people can be wary of replying to new posters, so coming back and interacting with the thread could help.

Good luck.

The BMC Club finder page is here:

https://services.thebmc.co.uk/climbing-wall-finder#clubs

It's worth noting that the "locations" of the clubs are typically based on a typical committee member's address and do not necessarily reflect the centre of gravity of the club (I also can't find my local club on there for some reason so there may be some others absent).

Big national clubs, like the Climbers' Club, often require more experience or have additional membership requirements so while they are fantastic clubs to be a member of they probably won't offer what you are looking for.

Also take a look at the YMC who I know have a couple of very nice huts (very cheap bunkhouses accessible to members) and see how much activity they have near you:

Thanks Godwin, I'll have go round a couple of the local climbing walls and see if there have any suggestions. The lift and partners is a good shout, pretty new to the forum so hadn't realised you can post asking for mentor/experince partner.  Didn't have a clue about there being a botting on UKC, appreicate the heads up.

Cheers, hadn't seen the old post but quite a lot clubs listed seem pretty local. I'll give those a go

My pleasure.

If you decide to go down the club route, have a look at their meets list, it will give you an idea of what they are actually currently doing.

Also do not be put off by joing procedures, like attending three meets, it is an opportunity for them to see if you will fit with them, and for you to  see if they will fit with you, there is nothing spooky about it.

You could be at the start of a great adventure.
