So, building on the other thread with it's strange definition of climbing choss/tooling chalk quarries, and moving on to a much more elitist criteria...

How many counties in the UK can you climb bolted f8a routes?

While we at it - how many different rock types does that encompass?

Me personally, none.

Sorry I'm just on my way out ....

I'll start the bidding...

Yorkshire
Derbyshire
Conwy
Denbighshire
Flintshire
Dorset
Devon
In reply to metal arms:

Shropshire and Cornwall (or maybe not, perhaps Berlin Wall is the hardest in Shropshire)and not 8a, and perhaps there aren't any 8as at the Cheesewring.

Avon, presumably - there are 8as in the Gorge, right? And whatever county Cheddar is in. And a bunch of places in Scotland.

In reply to Ally Smith:

Somerset for Brean Down and Cheddar 8as

In reply to Ally Smith:

Vale of Glamorgan (Masda at Southerndown, 8a+)
Swansea (several 8as on the Gower)
Neath Port Talbot (several 8as at Dinas Rock)

There may be an 8a in the valleys, but nothing official.

FYI, in case your wondering, I'm using the modern Principal Areas as defined here:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Administrative_divisions_of_Wales#Principal_ar...

And i'll try and fill in a 3* example. Could end up being a nice ticklist?

> Yorkshire
- Zoolook, Malham
> Derbyshire
- Powerplant, Cheedale Cornice
> Conwy
- Statement of Youth, LPT
> Denbighshire
- El Rincon, Dinbren
> Flintshire
- Hades, Devils Gorge
> Dorset
- Hell's Darker Chambers, Dancing Ledges
> Devon
- Cider Soak, Ansteys Cove
> Avon
- Academic, Sea Walls (probably not the 3* route i promised at the start)
> Somerset
- Milky Bar kid, Brean Down
> Cheshire
- Rosetta probe, Forgsmouth Quarry
> Gwynedd
- The Dark Half, Rainbow Walls (some might argue 7c+, but i definitely think it's 8a!)

In reply to Ally Smith: Dunbartonshire.
In reply to Ally Smith:

Is there anywhere in Ireland, I wonder? (or Northern Ireland, I suppose, according to the strict terms of the question).

In reply to TobyA: Should add various routes, basalt, at both Dumbarton Rock and Dumbuck.

You'll have to help me out with a specific route. I can't think of any high standard limestone sport climbing in Lancashire.

Closest i can think of would be one of the Longridge traverses?
In reply to Ally Smith:

Chapel Head Scar? Is that not in Lancashire? (county boundaries not my specialist subject)

There is a slate 8c in Cathedral Quarry in Cumbria. I think Chapel Head is in cumbria technically, so I guess that has slimestone over 8a?

In reply to TobyA:

Elsewhere in Scotland, you've got:
- Aberdeenshire (Red Wall Quarry (Lucifer, Dracula))
- Kincardineshire (Sportlethen (Power Hound), the Orchestra Cave (Crescendo, Dangleberries, Bang Tidy etc))
- Angus (Balmashanner (The Niche, Merchant of Menace), Arbroath (Ossian))
- Perthshire (Glen Ogle (Spiral Tribe, Digital Quartz etc))
- Invernesshire (Steall Hut Crag (Ring of Steall, Stolen etc), the Camel (Ubuntu, Death is a Gift))
- Ross & Cromarty (Goat Crag (Fun Prow), Am Fasgadh (Stork's Route), Creag nan Luch (Stalks))
- Argyll (The Anvil (Hunger, Metalcore etc), Tighnabruaich Viewpoint (Hand of Andromeda, Elysium etc)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head - sure someone with a handy copy of Scottish Sport Climbs could add a few more.

In reply to Stuart S:

Should have added -
Red Wall Quarry is granite
Sportlethen and the O Cave are a type of schist, though there's also granite at the O Cave
The Angus sport climbing is on quarried and natural sandstone
The Camel is conglomerate
The Ross & Cromarty crags are gneiss and I think the remainder are schist

In reply to chris fox:

Right - well i was going to put together a 8a counties ticklist - but UKC is informing me that they won't accept any entries from my computer as it's recently been used to send spam...

...given that this PC hides behind several layers of International Oil Company servers and firewalls, anti-virus etc, I don't think that's likely!

Anyone else had this error message?
 Stig 30 Sep 2013
In reply to johncoxmysteriously: Avon isn't a county. Avon Gorge is in Bristol I would have thought.
