Anyone seen it yet?

Verdict?

I love Danny Boyle and I shall go, but its more as a curiosity. It's difficult to imagine how it could possibly have the impact of the original

In reply to Babika:

saw the original last night. Still very powerful

In reply to Duncan Bourne:

I'll need to watch the first one again since it gets such (almost) universally good reviews. The only time I saw it, it left me cold I'm afraid, other than recognising local landmarks and, in one scene, a friend's flat.
 Steve Perry 23 Jan 2017
In reply to Babika: Does it follow Irvine Welsh's follow up book to Trainspotting titled Porno? If it does I'll watch it, if not I'll maybe watch it.

 coinneach 23 Jan 2017
In reply to Steve Perry:

"Loosely" based on Porno apparently.

Saw the original in the cinema in Chamonix. The place was full, and the only seats left were on the front row.

Cut to the scene where the boys are trying to get straight and decide to go on a hill walk. Renton starts his "the English are (w) anchors.." speech. It quickly became apparent that the cinema was full of Scots and French, didn't dare turn around due to the enthusiastic whooping. Hats were, I'm sure thrown in the air. We, possibly the only two English in there, slunk down into our seats and decided if anyone asked we were Welsh.
In reply to Babika:
Just watched the original again. So good. Really looking forward to seeing T2 on Friday!

Don't the Scots come out of that rant rather worse according Renton's logic.

That's what I thought?
 hms 24 Jan 2017
In reply to coinneach:

T1 was only very loosely based on the original book. A rare case of improving on what's being adapted I thought as the book is written phonetically and consists of only mildly linked short stories.

It's not out until Friday so they would have to be criminals or time travellers.

 wilkie14c 24 Jan 2017
In reply to hms:

yes, and trainspotting is actually the middle book of a series of 3 - skag boys, trainspotting and porno. (Irvine Walsh) highly recommended reading and as you say, they are phonetic and can be tough but fine once you get the flow.
Glue and A decent ride by the same author are good too and interconnected characters.

Indeed, it's the film that made me want ti be a heroin addict.

You're right of course, something I didn't learn until I watched it on VHS some time later. There was so much cheering at the opening line of Renton's rant the rest of it was drowned out. My French, at the time, wasn't good enough to makes sense out of the subtitles.

"We, on the other hand, were colonised by wankers" etc.

Well I suppose they could have been at the premier? Its not all celebs y'know, I had a mate who went regularly because she worked for some advertising agency and got free tickets.

But I agree, we'll have a few more opinions after Friday

I'm looking forward to seeing it. It seems to have had a good reception from the celebs responses , if that's anything to go by.

Watched the original again this afternoon, had a snooze then listened to the soundtrack on the way to the cinema.

Good seats, box of popcorn and a slushy for my misses.

Both of us very excited...

...aaaaaaaaaaaaand it was gash. So disappointed. Watched to the end (some left early) but wished I hadn't bothered. Cheesy, self indulgent, soulless, plotless garbage.

Bah humbug! What were you expecting? Obviously it was never going to be as good as the original but I thought it was still really good. It didn't try too hard or take itself too seriously. It was a very different film but still had some great scenes. Plus there was some cool cinematography.

 Toccata 29 Jan 2017
In reply to Anti-faff:
Gash it is. The same group of 4 that watched the original (as students) had a T2 day. Fly to Glasgow, taxi to Bridge of Orchy, train to Corrour, tins of beer on the way to the top of LU, couple of pints in the Station house before reversing the journey and seeing T 2 in London.

"Should have stayed at Corrour" was the verdict. Fun day though.

I'm lookign forward to it, expecting that it won't be as good, but it at least gives me an excuse to re-watch the original!

In reply to Toccata:

Ah nice one, that's ace!!

Out of curiosity I got the train to Corrour from Darlington one March (a good few years ago now) and walked to Lochaline. Nearly bloody killed me.

Saw it on Saturday. Things to remember it is a sequel, all sequels are pants with the exception of The Expendables (the original was really pants so quite difficult to be worserer). Having said that it is actually pretty good. Yes it has innumerable references and flashbacks to the original, but as a group of nearly 50 year olds that is generally what we do - navel gazing. Music is pretty good.
If you expect it to be Trainspotting you will be disappointed, but if you accept it is a different story about some characters you once 'knew' you'll probably like it. I did.
In reply to Babika:

Saw it last night in Stockport and thought it was very good. To call it gash is nonsense and perhaps suggests that those folk wanted to see an identikit reconstruction of T1 which was never going to happen. It had some very good scenes and some unexpected humanity in small sections, and some great comedy. Well worth the price of admission.

No way! (The original) T2 was better than The Terminator.

In reply to Babika:

Trainspotting sequel better than the original, enjoyed it much more than I expected. Only let down by two bad bits of Ewen McG's acting, but that is better than expected.

Of course, it wouldnt work without the first film. Did like first film, but had seen the play just before, and read the book, so knew film could have done more (Boyle did admit he regretted not including the scene that gives Trainspotting its name. Indeed, it appears in the sequel).

T2 will ALWAYS be the Arnie film. Again, miles better than original Terminator.

imho
