Mat for home indoor climbing wall

My son has constructed a 50% angle home climbing wall and we're finding it difficult to find a suitable mat. We're looking for 10-15cm thickness, foam, and require an area of approximately 2.5 metres squared.

We've been told to purchase 4 smaller mats which can be stuck together with velcro...

Does anyone have any advice please? Any brand recommendations, links, or other help would be really appreciated, thank you so much.

I used this website to order the specific dimensions and foam type I wanted for my home woodie.

There are a few other similar companies.

I use old bed mattresses for my wall. They were spare when we were getting new replacements, but probably free second hand, as not many folk would want someone else’s to sleep on?

My kids have a Dripex gymnastics mat - available in assorted sizes/thicknesses. Join together with rip tape up to size required.

Usually loads on a certain auction site/FB Marketplace.

Thanks so much, I'll take a look. Much appreciated.

In reply to Will_Woof:

Thanks for this. It's just a bit too small but otherwise exactly what we're looking for. I really appreciate this.

In reply to David Myatt:

Thanks for this, good idea!

I asked my local leisure centre and they had a 30 cm gymnastics mat they were throwing away. A bit of duct tape and good as new. And free.

Where are you based?

In reply to DizzyT:

Thank you so much for this. We're looking for approximately 2.5 x 3 meters and I've quickly realised that transporting a mat of this size will be the major problem!

So, a free mat sounds great but probably logistics of getting it here (Cambridge) will be the issue.

Really appreciate your reply though.

In reply to Fraser:

Near Cambridge. Transporting a mat here seems to be the major issue now!

my local wall disposes of sections of saggy matting every few months. I have matted out my garage with that and put a bit of old carpet over the top. I suggest you ask around the local walls and see if they are planning any maintenance.

When my wall was in the kitchen (covid!) I used my outdoor bouldering mats.  if you dont want the trouble of making your own then I suggest you do that as it'll equip your son for outdoor bouldering too.

I’ve got this from Core climbing:

https://coreclimbing.co.uk/home-wall-matting/

it comes in modules so easy to transport. It wasn’t cheap but the moonboard is in our lounge so needs to look presentable.

You seem to have had a fair volume of actually useful replies now, so I feel obliged to say that there's always the Tom Randall approach instead...

In reply to mutt:

Really appreciate this, thanks. I'll contact our local centre.

In reply to Twiggy Diablo:

I've just checked this out and it looks promising. Thanks very much, hugely appreciated.

I'm going to have to google Tom Randall! This is all very new to me but my son is super keen. It's been great to get so many responses - I sense this is a very supportive community...

Tom Randall's cellar is a fantastic example of what NOT to do in a home wall even though it's really cool!

I took a 30cm thick mat (ex climbing gym) from Abergavenny to Bristol, strapped to the roof of my hatchback. I took the smaller roads, rather than the motorway!

A decent ratchet strap or two through the windows will be fine. I did it at a similar time of year and it was a bit cold (and a bit unnerving when the wind got under the front of it and lifted it up) but as long as it is strapped down tight, it shouldn't go anywhere. Just don't slam on the brakes!

In reply to PaulJepson:

Thanks for this. So there's the possibility of collecting a mat in the car - wouldn't want to do it today though with Storm Bertie raging! I appreciate the info.

Goodness - thanks for educating me!

I would love to see a photo of your Moon board in your living room 😁

This is set at 15 degrees, but has a motor on the back and the chains are easily adjustable so can go all the way down to 40 degrees.
