I've got a pair of Julbo Nomad CAT 4 sunglasses that I use for skiing (they're too dark for much else!), which have unfortunately been scratched on one lens. It's fairly superficial, but enough to be noticeable, because it's right in the middle of the lens.

I did try to get replacement lenses for them years ago, but iirc the style had changed a bit and couldn't get any to fit.

I know it's unlikely, but does anyone know if I can get them repaired - it's a mirror coating on a plastic lens?

Short answer, no.

I've enquired about getting scratches removed from prescription glasses and it's a flat no. They'd have to remove the existing coating, polish out the scratch and re-coat. Even if you found someone who could do it, it would be far cheaper to buy new glasses.

Ok - pretty much what I expected.

It's a very sperficial scuff, possibly just affecting the coating, so I was hoping things might have moved on enough to just re-coat that.

Sounds like I'll have to live with it. Shame, as they're otherwise fine and a brilliat fit on me.

Would they be covered under your home contents policy?

Really not worth the excess to claim on that due to age and they probably only cost me about £45 at the time. I just really like the style and fit.

Re replacement lenses. I was looking for this about a year and a half ago. I found a couple of places that offer this and seemed to think they can match most things. Not sure when you were looking but might be worth another look? The cost I got quoted was about 50 odd quid iirç.

I can't remember the company though I'm afraid

If you really like the frames (and they're not so old as to have deteriorated) you may be able to get new lenses fitted. It's called 'reglazing', and there are machines which will trace the shape of any frame and cut lenses to fit.

Go to your nearest independent optician - chains won't be interested - or even go direct to a glazing workshop - they sometimes like challenges! Google 'optical lab', 'optical workshop ' or similar.

Would I be right in thinking, based on that cost, that they aren't prescription lenses?

If it would be of any interest to you, I have a pair of Julbo Nomad 125 Zebra (i.e. photochromic from cat 2 to cat 4) sunglasses which I can't use any more due to my deteriorating eyesight and which I have been planning to unload via a certain well-known auction site.  I used them for skiing very happily for many years before I was forced to switch to prescription varifocals (these days I use OTG goggles with a photochromic lens).  The style may not be the same as your current ones though, see here: https://www.polarsport.pl/media/catalog/product/cache/d6e45dfc1b25b95a4e830...

They're in the original Julbo case, with the originally supplied choice of black or silver glare shields (as per the photo linked above).  If you don't like the glare shields you can leave them off.

Drop me an e-mail via UKC if you would be interested and I can give you more details.
