If anyone is curious about the work done by the BMC Technical Committee, which I chair, this video discusses the part done by one of the volunteers on the committee who is the UK representative on the UIAA - International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation Safety Commission:

There is also a description of the 50th anniversary plenary session here:

The UIAA Safety Commission has been contributing to improvements to equipment safety for a little over 50 years now and the BMC has been making an active contribution for much, if not all, of that time.

Technical committee do various other bits to help improve equipment safety and other areas associated with it as well and I am happy to talk about that a bit as well when I have some free time.

Really, you're the Chair of the BMC technicial committee, well you have kept that quiet.

In reply to Godwin:

Why should I keep a significant voluntary commitment, to something I am proud of supporting, quiet? I also

Particularly where it benefits said voluntary commitment to have someone be visible?

Not everyone on here follows the BMC threads and it seemed sensible to be open about my role with the committee. People have said that they want the BMC to talk about what it's doing away from the area meetings (given difficulty for some members to get to them) and to be more open in general (given previous issues with openness), I am trying to provide that on behalf of Technical Committee.

I am unsure if that was just a poor joke or you intended it to be snide but……

One (valid*) question that has been asked of the BMC over the past few years is “what does the BMC actually do?”. Obviously the BMC have made an effort to push information out via their updated website, socials etc but it also falls on the volunteers to “shout out” a bit about the work they do. UKC is the largest climbing social media platform in the UK (i assume?) so it seems sensible that the Chair of Technical Commitee should identify themselves as such when posting on the gear forum.

Hopefully it helps to put a face and name to parts of the BMC that are not necessarily in plain view and, in the case of Spenser, might make the Technical Committee more accessible should someone have a query?

(Full disclosure, I am also on the Technical Committee and one of my roles is to represent the BMC on the UIAA Safety Commission)

*valid as the BMC has in the past sometimes taken a “hide one’s light under a bushel” approach despite doing a lot of good work.

(edited for typos, though I have zero confidence I caught them all….)

Apologies, I thought I had removed the post in question, but something must have happened (as it's quite clearly still there).

Godwin has subsequently been banned. Posts like that bring absolutely nothing positive to the table. It's just school playground bullying and not something we wish to host on site.

Thanks Rob, I was a bit puzzled by the post given that I know Godwin via a club I am part of and while we disagree about the BMC can get on reasonably well.
