Lightweight down jackets are ubiquitous these days, so one way to stand out in this crowded market is to offer a more sustainable product. The Earthrise Hooded Jacket successfully combines environmentally conscious materials with mountain-ready performance. You get a lot for your money too, says Tim Hill.

Whilst all well and good, do remember that buying a new anything will have more environmental impact than making do with what you own already or buying second hand.

Down has excellent pack down to warmth, and weight to warmth ratios, but do you really need all that excellent performance for going to the shops and weekend cragging? Would your old down jacket, with a bit of tape over the holes, or an old fleece do?

Since the increase in popularity of second hand clothes apps, I have stopped buying new clothes, except underwear. Not only does this save me money, I like to think it lessens my environmental impact as the clothes are already manufactured and would otherwise sit in a cupboard unused before being thrown away for space.
