Piberger see, 4 kbI am always on the lookout for new venues, preferable towards the lower end of the grade spectrum and a thread on UKClimbing caught my attention. Someone had asked about summer venues where they could climb and also get involved with other activities in the local area.

Chris Craggs makes the case for the Ötztal valley in Austria as a picturesque multi-activity destination.

More articles like this please. I was wondering what the trad stuff was like round here. I understand the Europeans like thheir bolting but I'm wondering what the real stuff has to offer. Great write up, thanks.

Not done any trad here but its a lovely area and loads of alpine stuff to go for as well.

Don't know if its still the case but you could get the topos from the local tourist office for the bolted stuff.

There’s also a free app with all the Topos (climbers paradise) and PDFs online. Some of the crags are the most child friendly crags that i have ever seen. And the climbing is really good, too.

I'm not sure if they still have the topos at the Tourist Info but many of the cliffs have a big display board with the topos displayed,

Any bouldering at all?

Nice article but still understates the amount and variety of climbing to be found there, the tourist info site has plenty of info, including topos for some of the climbing gardens (crags) and klettersteig (via ferrata), bouldering etc:

https://www.oetztal.com/climbing

The climbers paradise site has topos for the sport climbing and ice routes:

https://www.climbers-paradise.com/en/

Had a trip there in June and stayed at the camp site in Langenfeld , which cost us about £12 each per night and was the most luxurious site I've ever stayed on. Crags and Via Ferrata within walking distance. Beer in the bars was between 3.50 and 4 euros a pint. Going back in January for some ice routes.

The package is also free on the Rockfax app as well.

Yes but with rather sensitive access issues. A bit of googling will find you full information, including a topo, all in German. Google translate is your friend.

Speaking of sensitive access, anybody know of a topo for Piberger See? Seems not to be covered on Climbers Paradise or any of the other usual topo sources, for some reason.

Yes, the local ring bound guidebook also covers the bouldering

It is Austria - beer and sausages are both top notch

Not sure many will want to pay £1000 for a specialist iApp viewer though Alan

Have a look at http://www.oetztalclimbing.com/ for more info regarding the less known crags in Oetztal.

Spent 3 weeks there this summer with my 16 year old son, camping between Solden & Langenfeld and had a great time. Lots of peaks c.3,500m - 3,700m both with & without glaciers to have a crack at, loads of rock climbing & bouldering, really atmospheric via ferratas, great walking, lovely food, friendly huts & bars. Worth joining OeAv if you're staying in the huts & book early as some of them are super busy in the school holidays. There's also plenty of non-mountain stuff if you need a break! Mayrhofen in the Zillertal is a good comparator.

The article mentions a 2017 guidebook - is this available to purchase online or only in shops nearby?
