I weigh 130lb im 17 and i can do about 15 pull ups. Whats the UK average?

In reply to dyno:

For climbers or non climbers? I suspect that the "average" member of the population would struggle with one.
 vincentvega 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno: palms facing inwards or outwards? hands together or open??
 grumsta 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:

Which way round are you doing them? They are much easier with your hands facing you, but that is less useful for climbing I think. It also depends how far you pull up how hard the are - just til your chin is at the bar level is much easier than if you pull all the way up.

Either way 17 sounds pretty good - I can only manage about 7 either way round.
 sincybabes 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:

I can do about 18 door frame pull ups
or about 20 odd on a bar

and im 83kg
In reply to dyno:

I can do one if I try really hard!

(and I'm really quite proud of it

In reply to dyno: Palms facing towards you, shoulder width apart.
 MttSnr 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:

The other point worth noting is the angle of your arm at your lowest point. I see loads of people down the climbing wall who will just lower themselves to 90 degrees and then pull back up again. You've got to go all the way down and get those arms straight.
 Alex1 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:

waste of time to work those palms facing away slightly wider than shoulderwidth is the most useful for climbing. Although tbh I don't think pull ups are a lot of use past a certain number know people who can climb much harder than me who would struggle with 10...
 vincentvega 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno: palms facing away, the emphysis is on your upper back, palms towards is on your biceps.
 grumsta 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:

If you think about what you do when climbing, surely it is more useful to do them with your palms facing away from you.

I could always do 15, I could 2 one arm pull ups with either hand, currently I cannot do a single pull up
And its not weight, I am only 140lbs.
 James Oswald 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:
I can do at least 15 when fresh. And i can do 3 with 27kg attached to me.
Is there amn average number of pull ups that someone has to be able to do before doing a one armer?
 vincentvega 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno: i can reach 30+ on a bar and i weigh just over 12st. but cant do a one armer at all??!!!

With momentum?
Jonno 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:

I can do two...on a good day with Dawn French on my back.
 dirtbag1 05 Apr 2008
In reply to MttSnr: Not a good recommendation Eric, going to straight arm WILL promote elbow inflammation and tendonitis, don't go to straight arms on pull-ups.
blah blah blah only my opinion etc.
 James Oswald 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:
almost straight is good and it puts strain on your muscles stopping yourself going to straight.
Also you should pause at the bottom to destroy your momentum.
 vincentvega 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno: no, no momentum at all. thats a classic 'weightlifters' cheat!!
 MttSnr 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dirtbag1:

No yr probably right. I should have expanded a bit more but I was feeling lazy when I posted.

So, I don't go completely straight and lock my elbows off, cos as you say, thats likely to lead to injury. However, I drop to nearly straight, keeping a small abount of tension in the elbow. Then when I do the pull up, it helps strength train throughout the whole cycle of arm movement and not just the last 90 degrees.

In reply to dyno: I got a new record of 5 door frame(second joint) palm-away ones on wed, well happy!!
In reply to dyno: i cand o about 20 with my palms away, though now i put my rope and hardware in my bag for chinups as its better for when you have to lock off to place gear and i can do 11 but i dont reli think i need to do tht many just do
 DancingOnRock 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno: Chin up is with palms facing. Pull up is with palms away from you. Without training I would expect 3 chin ups or 1 pull up from most fairly fit people. I used to be able to do 20 pull ups. Not any more though. Don't allow your shoulders to relax that will put undue strain on your joints and fairly quickly lead to injury. I don't think locking elbows off is a problem, but maybe someone else will have a definitive answer on that one.

when you're really good try.
http://www.beastskills.com/OneArmPull.htm

Pull ups are going to be more use to you due to the way most holds on a rock face are, but really concentrating foot placement and good use of the legs is going to improve your climbing much more.

In reply to necromancer85:

You know (or certainly know of if you haven't met) someone who trad climbs probably harder than you and boulders at a not entirely dissimilar level (I think) who is unable to do even one........

I agree that they are pointless really. Things like lockoff strength and one-arm strength are probably more relevant, finger strength robably more so, but even then good technique will probably save you from those on a lot of things. I can probably do somewhere not far either side of ten, but I've not tried for ages so couldn't tell you exactly. The most I've been able to do has been about 17, but it didn't really help me climbing very much.

Not a single bastard one as my arm fell out of its shoulder last night.

Putain de merde.

In reply to dyno: I should have explained previously, Obviously i do mostly pull ups with palms away because it better for climbing buti needed to know what the UK average would be for normal pull ups for some Sports Coursework. Thought here would be the best place to find out lol
 ranger*goy 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:

I can go about half way up.

So thats none isnt it
 James Oswald 05 Apr 2008
In reply to ranger*goy:
What's the difference between a pullup and a chinup?
I always thought chinups = palms facing you, pullups = palms away
dyno 05 Apr 2008
In reply to james oswald: now thats a question! i always thought they were the same
 ranger*goy 05 Apr 2008
In reply to james oswald:

I dont know but I cant do either.
 James Oswald 05 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:
Yep chinups are performed with the palms facing you; pullups, with the palms facing outward.

 pinkie 05 Apr 2008

i managed 6 pull ups palms facing me today... got my chin above the bar too... 6 mite not sound alot but i had been climbing for 2 and half hours previously and im a woman...

In reply to pinkie:

You put me to shame!
 kingholmesy 06 Apr 2008
In reply to james oswald:

Rumoured to be 22.

I think the record for two armed pull-ups is 135. This was done by taking breaks by hanging on the bar with one`arm and shaking out the other. Apparently without doing this "it's very hard to do over 80 because of the blood draining away from the arms". So says an old edition of Climber. Personally I would have thought it was pretty hard to do that many pull-up anyway.
loulou 06 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno

surely its 23.7?
 Matt Schwarz 06 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno: doing about this for a phyisology assingment at uni, the top 10% of 17 year olds can do 15. it doesnt say what style though palms in/ palms out/ full extension
 James Oswald 06 Apr 2008
In reply to kingholmesy:
i would have thought it is way higher than 135.
 James Oswald 06 Apr 2008

Yay i'm in the top 10 percent of 17 year olds!!!
Where did you get that stat from?

Todays crossfit:

With a continuously running clock do one pull-up the first minute, two pull-ups the second minute, three pull-ups the third minute... continuing as long as you are able.

Use as many sets each minute as needed.

 kingholmesy 07 Apr 2008
In reply to Matt Schwarz:

Yeah but that's with dismounting from the bar.
 jkarran 07 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno:

UK average = 16.7

Shouldn't you be 59Kg if you're 17?
jk

PS I can probably do about 5

In reply to dyno:

For climbing specific exercise I find two finger pullsup with palms racing away is good. You can alternate between forefinger + middle finger and middle finger + ring finger.

When it comes to hanging on a crimp and placing gear or making a clip I found these were alot more helpful than full hand pulls as jugs usually are not usually where you need your strength.

Before climbing I can do about 12 first 2 fingers and then about 6 2nd and 3rd fingers.

After 4 hours on a wall I can do about 4 on a fingerboard !!
 Bella 07 Apr 2008
In reply to dyno: I can do one. On a good day.

In reply to dyno:

used to be able to do a lot but i heard they are bad for your shoulder jouit if you go all the way down and up. i avoided them for years but now do about half of the full movement range. and the scar tissue has not been re-aggravated.

In reply to your original question and in relation to climbing. I'm not sure that many of the best climbers I've known, I'm talking about folk who climb E5+, ever did pull ups as part of any training regime or could do that many if they tried.

Most climbers are limited by their technique or their attitude rather then their fitness.

The metric part of the dial on your scales.
