500m. As the name suggests, a classic alpine style ridge. Consistent grade II across the whole of the ridge. Easy to underestimate the length of this route.

βeta: Agree with Route description... very easy to underestimate the length of the climb. Climbed it in good condition, very mixed weather, exhausted and mildly hypothermic before toping out.

Gavin McColl 7 Apr AltLd β Found route without any issues, roped up early when easy scrambling started and pitched the full route. Mixed conditions but mostly dry rock with patches of snow making some sections more complicated, expescially the crux section where a loose rock made the obvious route unclimbable. Crampons and axes were not taken out at all, was a fantastic day.

Al_Mac 19 Jan AltLd Lovely route, nice and chilled and a stunning day. Even without rushing it was a quick ascent! Topped out by midday despite the seemingly usual confusion of trying to work out which ridge is which on the west Face. Finished off up Aonach Beag and sat at the viewpoint in the fading light to wait for the last chair down.

Tom McCabe 20 Jan, 2018 Lead O/S Long plod through thick snow to get there, but rewarded with absolutely stunning weather. Lots of soloing up frozen turf an ice to get to the start of the rock, pitched from there until moving together up the exit ridge. Some interesting steps but mostly straightforward scrambly II. Based on this thread https://www.ukhillwalking.com/forums/winter_climbing/finding_the_start_of_golden_oldy-633953 I'm 95% sure we were on this route, despite every other party we met thinking it was western rib; the V of two streams joining is clear even when banked out with powder. And managed to get the gondola down!

If i did it again I would only take one rope thus reducing weight and the amount or rope that has to be dealt with when moving together, of course this is only a good idea if you think you are unlikely to pitch much of the route.

Sam Maher 6 Feb, 2015 Solo O/S Finding the started proved unnecessarily difficult. Moral of the story, check the approach description in the guidebook before thinking you know better! Really good route with loads of great exposure, a little too much in some places since neither mike nor I had much experience in winter placements so ended up unintentionally soloing it all. As the sun came over, the snow started to turn to mush and it was more like swimming and I was quite conscious about not falling off. Great route but one we got away with!

After a few pitches tried to switch to moving together... just in time for an unexpected fin-like arete which forced us back to pitching. Surprisingly easy walk in despite all the snow; back down in plenty of time for gondola.

After the first steepening there was much more snow on the route and made for fast going. Airy in places but nice scrambling all the way, a couple of spicy moves but nothing too bad. Made good time but can see how this would be time consuming roped up/under powder. Superb day.

CathS 30 Jan, 2010 AltLd O/S A long and committing route and the conditions (lots of unconsolidated powder snow over rock) made for quite a challenging day out. Much scrabbling around for decent axe placements and footholds. The steep buttress pitches felt moderately desperate at a couple of points - pretty run-out and felt like very technical moves for a Grade II! But it all came good and thankfully we topped out before it got dark - unlike other less fortunate parties on the crag. The very airy and horrifically unstable upper ridge was incredible! Must have been in the zone by that point... Mark's first proper winter route, for which a medal is in order...

Mark's first proper winter route, for which a medal is in order...

wykealpha 9 Apr, 2008 2nd We failed to locate the climb the previous day but were camping further down the Allt Daim so had a second attempt. Deep powder covered the ridge which made for a long day. The second time I have climbed this route, an absolute gem.
