Rockfax Description
The first few moves are a Baggy legend, but unfortunately the upper pitch lets the route down. The first pitch provides an excellent alternative to the first pitch of Midnight Cowboy, should the tide be in. Start by abseiling or downclimbing the descent ridge to a small ledge, about 12m above the base of the zawn. Opposite is a small flat spike that touches the edge of the overhanging zawn wall.
1) 4c, 20m. Not a pitch for the short! Fall across the zawn to reach the spike and pull across on good holds. Move steeply up to the edge of the slab and pull around onto it. Move right and slightly upwards to a peg before traversing 7m right, either high or low, to a stance on a small sloping reddy/brown ledge. Belay on good wires.
2) 4b, 34m. Reverse the traverse back left to the peg, and climb up above it heading for a square-cut flake with an old thread. Before reaching the flake, move leftwards on the best rock and then take the cleanest line above with care to a stake belay. © Rockfax

First move is a little ridiculous! It's a cliche, but it's fine once you commit. Thought most of the upper pitch was quite nice slab climbing, adequately protected. Very top section was a little loose-vegetated, but fine with care.

Led p1. 'Fall' across zawn probably the morphological crux. Step up onto slab probably technical crux. Psychological crux probably the run out slab traverse (if you take the higher line). Lower traverse (level of the remaining peg) a good bit easier. p2 = real adventure climbing. Never hard but requires a confident approach and good route finding nous/'mountaineering' skills. p2 around 43m - a good deal longer than that stated in rockfax guide. n.b. scramble down to start not all that bad as far as these things go

Seconded first pitch before continuing on Midnight Cowboy. The lean across the zawn was fine, but I didn't have the necessary flexibility to step across so had to do a nervous little jump to get my feet on! Rest of the pitch is fun, but no pushover at VS.

James corfe 28/Aug/17 AltLd

Cracking route! I lead p1 was good and p2 nice easy moves and plenty off gear. Warning there are two pegs on this climb the guide only mentions 1 you need to climb up by the oldest peg which is hard to miss as it's easy to miss. If you climb up by the old snap gate your gonna have a bad time (no gear hard moves)

Led the first pitch, 'falling across the zawn' was hard to commit to and then spent ages trying to find the right height for the traverse. Dan led the second pitch of Sexilegs which was pretty crumbly and i threw a big loose flake down.

"escaped" up the top pitch after I fell in the sea wading across to start Midnight Cowboy at a rising tide (Jack's idea), did not fancy HVS 5B with soaking wet everything and no chalk so did this instead... top pitch is absolutely horrific! loose, hard to protect and generally not very pleasant

andrea83 18/Jul/15 AltLd O/S

Overrated. I got the best deal-lead 1st pitch and Hamish got the second which isn't the best rock quality.

Hamish777 18/Jul/15 AltLd O/S

Andrea lead P1. The fall across turned out to be the easy bit on the first pitch. Getting your legs across is the tricky bit, I contemplated this a great deal with hands on one face, feet on the other and the water below. P2 is just horrific, the gear is thin, the rock questionable and there are long run out sections.

Peri P1, MK P2. Needed to pull on a sling which Peri had deliberately left dangling for me - I was at full stretch on the falling across move and couldn't reach the positive edge and the spike - anyone who is 5'2 or shorter should not attempt this on lead. The rest of P1 is easy. Don't expect to find much gear on P2, and beware, Rockfax provides an incorrect length for P2. Peri hadn't used much rope for the belay but I'd nearly run out of rope by the time I reached the belay stake, which puts P2 at about 45-47 metres.

Lead in one pitch. Unable to find suitable anchors to create multipitch unless done just after the zawn. Had a long rope, so went for it. Again crumbly rock towards the top and heavy vegetation meant protection placing was v. hard, with rocks disloging when weight-bearing. Scary as hell due to wind and rock conditions.

After falling across the zawn managed to step across then bridge back to the starting side - not quite as bad as anticpated. Set up a rope running down to the top of the climb from the first stake to use as a belay. Advisable as the top of the climb really unsafe and broken and the grass very steep up to the stake. Great, hot summer day but very few climbers - they probably all think the bird ban lasts until July tee hee!

Started this with Matt and Dave O'Conner. We were going to do Kinky Cowboy (1st pitch KB, rest Midnight cowboy). We got to 3rd pitch of MC but impending sunset and Matt wanting to get home asap made us give up. I wasn't really thinking clearly and protested, but Matt was right. Matt and DOC abseiled off and were going to throw down a rope for me to prussik up. But couldn't get rope down. They were 'running around like headless chickens' (says Louise) and asked a local climber to abseil down to rescue me. By the time he got down to my belay I'd gone; having just seen an air-sea rescue Sea King appear over the horizon I abseiled to beach (tide almost in) determined not to be humiliated, and scrambled up grassy slopes (actually in my panic I did start soloing up a very dangerous route that turned out to be HVS and had a wreath at the top. I'm glad I gave up on that way up!). Anyway the local rescued the gear I'd abandoned (2 nuts + 3 crabs and a sling). We then all went home. There's a photo of me alone on the slab after MC and DOC had baled out. my biggest climbing 'epic' so far. We'll finish this in 96 (didn't return until 2000!), but we've done the classic 1st pitch of KB. It was fun but quite easy. Actually did a similar start on our own variation of a Lundy climb (?) with Sharron. Guidebook says 'Falling over at the start of a climb is normally taken as a sign of incompetance, inebriation or both-on this climb it is inevitable - Estimate the distance to an obvious handhold on the opposite side then fall across the zawn. Climbers under 4 feet tall will now be hanging upside down with a broken nose.'
