800m. Almost certainly the finest winter climb in the UK available to weekend warriors, and certainly the longest. Tower ridge continues to fascinate and compel, with a magnificent mix of wall, ridge, and traverse lines taking the boldest classic alpine route almost to the very summit of Britain's highest mountain. The two crux pitches, the eastern traverse and the Tower Gap are formidable obstacles in any conditions, and many a party has been benighted attempting to solve their mysteries. On a ridge like this, route finding should be obvious, but in poor weather it can be a nightmare.

Left the Hut just after 6 for Point 5,which was too soft. Back to the Hut for a cuppa and change of gear then an Alpine Tower Ridge under blue skies. Initial chimney black. Snow and neve on ledges. Didn't get crampons on till just before the Traverse. Single axe useful at times. I led from just after the initial bit of the Traverse to the Gap - fun belay! Reasonably efficient ropework, moving together a lot.

Finally, after years of wanting this one! Took a while to find the start, we initially began too far left and round, and had to backtrack from some truly awful windslab slopes. Mike kindly let me lead the whole route, the cruxes for me being the groove out of the Douglas gap (not that many hooks in the andesite), and a vertical corner of rotten ice (token thread protection) just before the great tower. The eastern traverse felt straightforward though wonderfully absorbing, and the real highlight for me was the knife edge leading up to Tower gap- magnificent! Beautiful weather and a stunning sunset on the way down from the summit to boot! My happiest day in the mountains so far. Nice one Mike!

A great day out with perfect weather for most of the route - almost totally still and sunny, you could hear every little clink and conversation across the various buttresses which was quite eery. About 8hrs from the bottom of East gully to the top. The snow wasn't as useful as it could have been (a bit too soft) so this meant we ended up pitching more than we otherwise would. What a day! 6am rise, 7.30 left hut. 8.30 gear up. 7.30pm Great Tower. 10pm top out? 2.30am Hut? Mary led the first pitch. Turns out the standard route is considerably left of the stiff corner I climbed last year. Other teams declined my suggestion that they take it rather than queue! Mary took a fall on lead but got right back on it. Moved together then pitched a wee ice wall. (Right then back left would've been quicker but less fun. Mary's first Tricam at the belay prior!) More moving together then two long pitches up the left side of the Little Tower, the way the other teams had gone. Some great pully moves above very little gear! Mary got a decent belay prior to this. Handy as I almost came off on the slab pull near the belay. "Come ons" ensured that knees stayed on. Moved together to an "alarmingly banked out" Eastern Traverse. The ridge conditions altogether were lots of powder - fresh and windblown - over a mixture of powder, neve and some ice. So time-consuming, though favourable when hooks found. I led the traverse slowly, placing as much gear as poss. Probably 8 kicks for every step! Good double-wire belay at the end of this followed by the direct line on the tower. Butch! Big orange Tricam in nut mode was the ideal placement. Would've gone left but, as with so much on the day, couldn't tell if this was a banked out ledge or a thinly powdered slab and wasn't about to waste time finding out. Now dark, and the temptation to bivvy was there. But we soldiered on, in good conditions, thankfully. I retreated from the gap to re-belay in order to have two long slings ready. Gap definitely deeper than last year! Tempted by the direct-across move - got two solid axes on the far side - but didn't want to risk lack of hooks higher up nor put Mary through it. The slabby moves to the left were absolutely awful though. Aided those with some in situ tat and grabbed the in situ tat on the way into the Gap! Thank the Lord, I found a great boulder belay to bring Mary across from. A final pitch for the finish and then the long return began. The key highlight was me sending my axe sprawling down the path, having gone up to my thigh in a cunningly concealed drainage ditch. Euan had, unfortunately, not picked up my text message, so Mountain Rescue were aware but not out. A late one back at the Hut!

I really enjoyed this classic route and I think it is worth every one of its three stars. It felt harder than other grade IIIs that I've done, but that might have been due to a lack of neve on the day. The ice pitch on the little tower was a delight - pity I left our one screw with Liz on the belay, but the ice was so good that climbing without protection felt secure. We took about 7 hours bottom to top, with at least a half hour wait at the Douglas gap whilst two teams climbed the chimney ahead of us. We managed to overtake one team and we simul-climbed all but five pitches: the chimney above the Douglas gap, the little tower icefall, and three short pitches: * from the end of the Eastern Traverse to the Tower gap, *Tower gap itself, and *one pitch beyond that (Top tip, don't pull the rope tight when your second is traversing - Sorry Liz!). If you've only climbed grade III, 3 before then I suggest you do some long grade IIIs and a few short tech 4s in preparation so you've got something in reserve in case conditions aren't perfect when you climb. I'd also strongly suggest you learn how to move together safely and efficiently on easy ground before you tackle Tower Ridge, or you may not enjoy one of the best climbs in the UK, and one of the best alpine routes outside the Alps.

with Liz Fowler
Dizz 14/Feb/16 AltLd O/S

Rather a good first winter route of the season! Mainly simul climbed swinging leads, I was lucky enough to get the Eastern Traverse and Gap pitches - although possibly less scary on lead! Pete led Little Tower direct. Hard to find gear as rock is buried and iced, and not much good neve making the climbing harder, although enough. Serious but super fun. Got back down off the hill to the heather in daylight just, but still a long walk back down to car park! Think we were on it 7 hours - long enough! Walked in just after first light so prob 11 hours car to car with about an hour food and gear faff at CIC, and tricky navigation off the top down the shoulder - I didn't keep strictly enough to my bearing in the clag and got too far north, plus had to avoid nasty looking snow slopes. Memorable.

Gained the ridge by slopes behind Douglas Boulder. Moved Together to Little Tower. Pitched Little Tower, Eastern Traverse and Tower Gap. Eastern Traverse easy, but intimidating - walking on exposed snow ledge with very little belay. Nice technical move on top of Great Tower. Used in situ tat (A-zero) to down climb to Tower Gap. Climbing off tower gap was a technical crux. Left hand side detour looked uncertain under snow, we climbed straight up. I lead whole route but Eastern Traverse was equally serious for the second. We were alone on the route. 5.5 h since roping up at the crest of the ridge at 9 am. Left North Face car park at 5.45 am, back at 6.30 pm thanks to my poor navigation.

epic route, pitched first gulley and from eastern traverse to after tower gap, moved together for vast majority of it in howling winds and driving snow, bit of route finding issues below the great tower, the climbing up onto the great tower was fairly tough in the conditions, tower gap was mildly terrifying feeling like you are about to be blown out of it, but overall a fantastic route that somehow avoided becoming an epic, just a long day!

Despite starting really early from just below CIC (6:20am, camping) and moving together on the easy stuff we ran out of time. An epic struggle up East Gully in deep powder did not help. A lot of powder on the ridge and little useable snow/ice as far as the little tower where we decided to turn round at 10:45am. We started first pitch at 8:30am........slow. Some definite tech 4 sections going west around the little tower and up on to the great tower in today's conditions - not nearly as much snow build up as last time I did it in march. Still one of my favourite routes ever, just so good!

Some absorbing pitches - never harder than III but no time to faff around! Not in winter condition today - raining on the summit and the route was essentially a wet scramble with a bit of snow here and there, so we down climbed from the Little Tower and saved it for a proper winter day.

Tricadam 18/Mar/15 Lead O/S

Massively long day, due in part to starting from Achintee. 7.30am left car, 11am or 11.30am at the bottom of East Gully, 7.45pm at the top, 11pm at the cars, 11.30pm at the all-night garage! Alex's third roped winter climb, his second multipitch climb of any sort, my first experience of moving together. Soloed East Gully. Pitched the intro chimney - tech 4 in the unhelpfully thin conditions we found it in (Alex let out a yelp at one point - on a tight rope! A stiff intro to mixed climbing...) Moved together for most of the next long section. 2 pitches up the direct line on the Little Tower (fun, including an optional tech 5 direct problem above 2 Tricam placements which was great - though Alex ended up going way right on easy ground and past the belay, risking rope stuckness!) Moved together to Eastern Traverse, then 2 pitches to above Tower Gap - really fun. Beautifully firm snow ledge to walk on! And some of the only in situ gear. Almost sunset now and hardly a breath of wind. All day stunning, really. I very carefully strolled to the gap - no hands! - and made it look easy, once I'd figured out the wee ledge to aim for. Moving up the other side fun too - to the left on iced slabs. Put lots of gear in for Alex on second, who managed fine. We then unroped and he led to the top. Massive day, nerve-wracking for me given timing etc., but we did a good job. Look forward to repeating in due course.

Epic day out. Long waits at belays which led to us being benighted. We tried to descend after the eastern traverse due to the time but visibility was poor and the descent route was uncertain therefore we decided to continue. I led the great tower pitch with a head torch and Pete led tower gap. We led the ropes up for another group of 3 climbers to follow us. Topped out around 3 am and then walked back to the CIC hut. Additionally I led onto the little tower and the top out. Pete led the eastern traverse and the first chimney. Crux sections seemed to be the gap and the pitch up the great tower. Amazing sunny day - everywhere else! On tower ridge we were intermittently blasted with spindrift from very gusty winds. The route is excellent, some tricky short moves and a variety of challenges but never desperate. The biggest challenge was the queuing before each of the tricky bits. Started at 7.30am, got to plateau at 8pm. 3 hours spent waiting! Got in a tangle as we belayed on the top of the block in the gap and everyone climbed past - ropes were caught and I couldn't climb out the other side as was being dragged down. Think we should have started from CIC at 6am.

Second day of week's guided climbing on the Ben staying at CIC hut. Thaw and cornice collapse danger meant the second classic ridge of the week. Low cloud, poor vis so views limited. Gained ridge via Eastern Gully to Douglas Gap. Heavily banked-out over large sections and particularly Eastern Traverse where fallen-block chimney completely covered. Lunch at summit shelter the descent in high wind via abseil posts into Coire Leis. Moved together over all but major difficulties. Grand outing - shame about the views!

An ambition for a whiole. On the day I think the only party on the route. More satisfying to have broken trail and found the route. The spindrift and wind and lack of consolodated snow made the Ridge the best option. Jumped Tower Gap because the climbdown was covered and looked horrible. Very hard to put protection in all up the route. We simply moved together and found almost no natural protection due to the covering of snow. A great and satisfying day.

Snow conditions not brilliant, some horrendous insecure loose 'cruddy' snow sections making some of the easier 'moving together' type ground much harder and more serious (for us necessitating some extra pitching). Lots of rime higher up and somewhat better although still not brilliant snow conditions. Starting chimney poorly iced and really rather difficult. Good day out though - we completed the route in around 6 hours.

Clear day, bitterly cold, early start, late finish. Slow going in deep snow. The dicey snow meant we were forced to tackle the rock buttresses direct instead of out flanking them. I personally think the route is overated.

Absolutely amazing day. Overnight the snow had refrozen and most of the ridge had a light cover of fresh snow. Quite sunny for the bottom half so felt very alpine. We roped up near the little tower and moved together or pitched the rest of the route. Started snowing at the eastern traverse so the end felt quite epic. I led tower gap which was rather exciting and the final snow slopes were a bit unnerving on loose snow. Took about 8.5 hours in total. We finished off by leading two groups of walkers off the plateau who were lost in the mist.

Perfect weather, perfect climb. Very varied - loose powder, hard neve, thin ice, scramble, - conditions meant trickiest bit was just getting round the corner after Tower Gap - pretty vertical, no footholds, trust picks on thinish ice as you crab across...

Plastered with snow and rime. Moved together with the odd pitch thrown in, up to the Eastern traverse in 1.5hrs. Pitched the next bits - tricky move up the rime covered wall (harder than III) after the buried fallen boulder. Waited 2.5hrs at Tower Gap due to congestion. Thought most would have cleared it as we had started so late...

Brillant route - loved it. The crux for me was getting out of Tower Gap. The Little Tower and Eastern Traverse were fine. Heading out into a worsening forecast meant we left the car park at 3.30am, on the route by 7 after abit of faffing around and topped out about midday with the wind picking up and vis dropping. Couldn't ab down 4 gully due to conditions so a long wet walk down the tourist track ensued.

Beautiful day with the ridge in great condition, pitched little tower; found the first pitch of this the the hardest bit with some interesting mixed moves. The eastern traverse and the gap were also pitched with the approach to the gap felling very exposed, I led out and got a belay on a hammered axe and a spike, Neil took a 10m fall when he tried to get out of the gap, very exciting. We toped out just as the sun went down. Took us 11 hours because of the queues, would say IV, 3 is an appropriated grade as its a very hard day, wow what a route.

Staying at CIC hut, so should have been first on route, but spent a couple of hours walking back down path looking for the axe Chris had lost on the walk-in in the dark. No joy. Now last on route, and had a long wait in queue at the Gap. But worked to our advantage: by the time we topped out, the all-day clag was breaking and we had the summit plateau to ourselves. I was greeted by a small twite (I think) looking at me quizzically: the only moving thing in all that white. Then back to CIC hut for whisky and philosophising deep into the night. A brilliant day.

Sunset & moon shining through on summit. No rush & great day out. Stayed at C.I.C. Hut.

My 2nd scariest climbing moment ever when Tony tested a belay and pulled the block out of the wall resulting in a full rope length fall (150 feet) off the side of the ridge. To this day, I still can't work out how I held on with no other protection! Continued to the summit with 2 broken ribs and a knackered rope.

Very fast ascent. Roped up for the Tower Gap only.

Initial good conditions but powdery at the gap and had to queue for 4 hours while we struggled to get out......Topped out around 1am.....I will always remember this! Some guys behind us topped out so late (well early) they decided to wait for dawn on top.

Slept on the top. Sleep is not an accurate description. Serves us right for leaving Glen Nevis at 9.30am in Feb.

Stuck behind a very slow party, and consequently onto the plateau in the dark and truly wild weather. Another descent down Five Fingers Gully! All part of the full Scottish experience! An ascent with Paul Harding a couple of years later resulted in retreat from just below the Eastern Traverse with 20+ people in the queue ahead of us. Perfect neve too!

Bobs first winter route I think. Done a number of times whilst living in Onich including one night ascent in deep powder after work.
