Good route but a lot of snow plodding for a short pitch!
Naomi.P 1 Apr, 2018 AltLd O/S Approach was pretty deep and collapsy so we we headed straight for the ice and belayed on screws. Sadly that meant we used our only 2 screws so leo went round most of the ice pitch. Altlead from there 4 pitches up ok snow but very limited gear and always found a belay just in time. I lead the chimney which was my most satisfying winter lead to date and had just enough in situ and placeable gear. Cracks were well iced up and chimney was shiny so not much chimneying. Topped out on tower ridge in the middle of two groups of 3 on top of each other. Had to wait a long time for them to pass but recovered the psyche when we fully topped out.

Bristol_Quornstar 28 Mar, 2018 AltLd O/S Led P1 + 2, plus final couple including chimney. First icefall in good nick. Mid section just a snow plod really at the moment but gear placements well hidden. Top chimney was heavily rimed but still adequate gear placements can be found. Top of Tower Ridge was an untouched powder arete; both airey and gorgeous!

Stanners 13 Feb, 2016 AltLd O/S First ever proper winter route! After a multi hour tortuous walk in (the long approach!) from the car with over packed bergans we pitched the tent at the base near the hut and continued the snow trudging to the start point. Calves burning I spent most of the time day dreaming of sun kissed spanish crags with short walk ins. Determined to give winter climbing a shot we finally made it to the start. Finally some climbing! I led pitches 2 and 3, both were superb and a strong lead from Giles on the initial steep suspicious ice pitch. Tough and a bit scary struggling to have an eye for gear in winter conditions on the top pitch and was completely drained from the whole day fairly desperately topping out onto the ridge. Darkness engulfed us and the winds picked up so turned into a bit of an epic but managed to escape down via tower gulley and didn't cause an avalanche. First impression of winter climbing - a total new ball game where you can be knackered before you even start and getting down can be scarier than going up. An acquired taste but keen for another spoonful. Cheers for the intro Giles. The chickpea curry was epic.

Great full day out, cloud inversion got better all day, sunset on last belay and amazing stars on the summit. Epic day

skirton 6 Feb, 2015 AltLd O/S Great first ice pitch! Good neve and ice, every placement felt solid. However the whole climb took much longer than expected. 5 pitches instead of 3. Snow and ice section upto start of the chimney took 3 lengths of 60m rope. Resulting in climbing the chimney pitch and rest of tower ridge in the dark. Chimney pitch felt very bold as all cracks for gear placement iced up. But again enough good neve to get through. Amazing cloud inversion all day.

Misha 2 Apr, 2010 AltLd O/S Led the ice pitch, which was quite banked out so had only about 10 - 15 metres of steep ice (followed a direct line which was a good 4). Moved together on the snow plod middle section, with Rich leading. Tom led the chimney pitch, which was good fun. Shortly after Tom finished that pitch, Nick and Mike went past him at the Gap - they had set out from the car park a couple of hours before us. We caught up with them on the summit plateau. Glissaded all the way down No 4 gully and then almost all the way to the CIC Hut. Frosty, blue sky day - perfect! Enjoyable first and last pitches but spoilt by the snow plod... My first route on the Ben, apart from Carn Mor Dearg Arete four years ago.

Helen23 19 Feb, 2010 2nd Amazing route! Ice was in good condition, though the middle pitches required quite a lot of snow swimming due to the recent dump of powder. 12 hour day, summited the Ben at 7pm in the dark.
