200m, 8 pitches.

Rockfax Description
Continuously excellent climbing, brilliant rock, exhilarating situations and a stunning location make this the very best VDiff in the West Country. Although protection is always at hand, the exposure, sections of downclimbing and the traversing nature of the route call for all party members to be competent at the grade. Slings are very useful. Start at a belay ledge just before the arete.
1) 25m. Move left around the arete to a ramp above the zawn. Move along to a corner at the end of the ramp. Climb the wall on its left on good holds, left and then back slightly right, to beneath a vertical crack. Climb the crack on superb holds to a belay on the ridge.
2) 10m. Move along the easy-angled ridge to a belay at the base of an open corner that forms a chimney at its top.
3) 18m. Climb the corner and chimney to a belay under a protruding neb.
4) 16m. Move up left to beneath the neb, and then make a traverse left through a large gap and climb down to a belay at a col.
5) 17m. Move up the ridge to where it steepens and move left to a traverse line. Follow the traverse line for about 5m and then climb a short corner up onto the ridge. Move along the ridge to a belay on its summit.
6) 30m. Downclimb a corner on the right of the ridge (when looking up the ridge) and then scramble along easy ground to a belay in the next col.
7) 25m. Move up the ridge to a perched block and traverse the foot ledge on its right. Descend awkwardly to a belay in the col.
8) 20m. Make a tricky move onto the right side of the pinnacle (this is the large pinnacle with the memorial plaque on it). Climb the face and ridge all the way to finish at the point where the ridge is crossed at the start of the descent.
9) VS 4b (optional). Another pitch is possible but is much tougher than the rest of the climb. © Rockfax

βeta: Only 2 tricky bits really, start of P1, but rest of P1 just a jugfest, lovely. Move around corner for final traverse feels a bit precarious but there are hands if you feel for them. Downclimb from P5 looked tricky but actually was a doddle, such grippy rock.

βeta: Warning - don't attempt on a sunny bank holiday weekend OR if you do then get there early. Also not convinced on the route finding, think everyone got it wrong on at least one pitch, if you are doing a really horrible down climb its because you missed out the 'traverse left' through the gap.

jackiartist 2 Oct, 2019 AltLd Great pitch one and seven. Would have enjoyed a lot more had we not been pressured for time - had to on it last pitch and jump off (Will did it solo whilst I sorted the rope). Traversed way too far right on pitch 5 too, i was enjoying following the foot rail I missed the massive crack. Ended up using jugs and smearing to get back on route - pleased it was Will's pitch and I was on TR for this bit.

NigelHurst 14 Sep, 2019 AltLd rpt Finally got the whole ridge in one go, all pitches on a classic route, brilliant day. Seconded P2, moved together on P6, led all others. Perfect conditions - low swell to get round corner to zawn, september sunshine, no wind, belter of a day. Favorite bit was P5, scrambling along the ridge and then straddling the ridge to belay was a delight. Watched the Bear Grylls day there with Anthony Joshua when we got home for a laugh, blimey he does some hilarious/sketchy crap in that program.

Rob Seymour 1 Sep, 2019 AltLd Well, that was probably the all-comers record for the slowest ever ascent of the Ridge. Climbing as a three, we had something like 170 years on the rope and the two pairs we were with totaled another 160 and 140 years. We were all very unlucky to arrive behind the most incompetent team I have ever had the misfortune to meet. Multiple lead failures, rubbish gear, no route finding ability. At least it was sunny, and warm, and we had a laugh. But really, some people should take up darts.

Dom Goodwin 22 Aug, 2019 Lead O/S Excellent route, probably even better than several other contenders for best UK VDiff I’ve done. Long, sustained and hard for the grade. The initial steep moves on wet rock with little for the feet felt technical and not really justified at the grade, particularly considering the terrifying booming zawn a few metres below and the seriousness of the situation. Many of the other pitches are also well worth V Diff. Glad to have a couple of grades in hand, I would have seriously struggled with this when V Diff was my lead limit! The first traverse line left below the Neb is a mistake. The guidebook description is misleading here - finding a hand traverse, I assumed it was correct, but presumably the higher line is also a hand traverse... Started at 4pm for Low Tide, topped out in the light just, but dark by the time my second had followed the last pitch. So couldn’t contemplate the VS finish.

Jonathangardner 22 Aug, 2019 AltLd O/S What an amazing route. I had so much fun with my 12yr old daughter. I led P1,4,5,8 and she amazingly led 2,3,6,7. We both had an incredible day. We timed the start just right, had to wait a little for the tide to go down a little more, and still we got splashed on the climb round to P1 but thankfully it was nothing dangerous. We spent ages watching to be sure! As many have said P1 is incredible. Thanks to the other parties to took photos of us. I will pass on ours of you when you log your climb. (PS Didn’t do the optional climb this time)

JR22997 18 Aug, 2019 AltLd O/S AltLd Solo A0 First pitch inaccessible due to swell so we choose a random line on some jugs that required some minor french free to reach. Organic free range clipstick useful for placing first piece of gear. Such clipsticks can also be used as an etrier at same move. Line most likely goes at HS 4b following horrifically tall first moves. These moves easiest obtained by gunning it. New line rejoins the original at the first stance. Probably. Once on top my clipstick/etrier abandoned the guidebook and chose our own line through the myriad of available lines found on the spine if the ridge. We did it in approx four pitches plus some simul soloing yardage and some full on free solos up the chimney and at other random intervals when we couldn't be arsed belaying so just tied of the rope in coils and carried on. All in epic route full of fun moves and good craic.

Big swell meant first pitch traverse cut off, instead found line up above a platform on the west side on the point. warwick 24 Apr, 2019 AltLd Just brilliant. What a day! At the start if felt like I had been shrunk small and tossed into a barista's equipment. All splashing roaring foam and noise. All the way up one or both feet were framed by sea whenever I looked down. Epic. We got to the very start (which Jon led), but had to dip off and avoid the last pitch due to light (and pub quiz). Would love to do this one again!!

Busby 28 Sep, 2018 AltLd O/S Started as the tide was turning so made quick progress to the first belay to avoid getting shouted at by Cat who was belaying on the bottom ledge. Getting through the gap was pretty straight forward, in retrospect doing the ridge with twin 60's was actually probably more difficult than it would be with a single 30-40m rope, stringing pitches together made for some interesting gear to avoid rope drag.

Cold on the east side out of the sun but hot on the west side without the wind. Pitch 1 was the best, intimidating above the sea but great holds. Ben done really well.

Patrick Moore 1 Nov, 2015 - Complex of Pitches 5,6,and 7. Bob leading Nicky as first pair. Me leading Lissa as second pair. Slippy mucky descent from abseil to our start with protected walk-in traverse just before start of pitch 5. Climb largely dry and grippy, though odd patches of slick and greasy rather disconcerting. Due to sea noise and stretches with no line-of-sight additional belays were made. Bob led both tricky traverses and belayed all three of us across these. With these episodes , and with stance management of ropes etc with two pairs closely following each other, whole adventure protracted. Protection mainly long slings, a few larger nuts and a few cams.

Simon Caldwell 1 Sep, 2014 AltLd rpt Even though were were there at low tide on a day with low winds, there was a huge swell, and when going for a look to see if I could get round the corner to the first pitch, I was drenched by a big wave. So after I dried off we traversed in to the top of the first pitch. Considered abbing in to the start but this was also getting hit by the waves. Where the normal route traverses left across a flake and back up a groove, I took the steep flake on its right hand side, really good and easier than expected, maybe HS 4a for this pitch. Finished off with the Armchair - not VS 4b as claimed by Rockfax, more like S 4c (4b if tall, 5a if short).

Later pitches feeling quite exposed. Lost a sling on a late thread anchor as second couldn't extract it. A gift to whoever climbs it next. Excellent day out. None of the climbing is hard - The toughest part is getting to the start. Highly recommend.

adam84 18 May, 2014 2nd Fantastic day climbing, Weather was a stark contrast to the previous attempt at this climb, first pitch is lovely, so many great moves and exposure on this climb, the atmosphere is fantastic, brilliant classic climbing, felt very comfortable and confident all the way up

jennym32 18 May, 2014 Lead O/S Fairly technical for the grade 1st & 4th pitches. Got stuck with loads of rope drag on the 4th pitch as you go along the ridge itself! Lots of traversing/ down climbing so you need a confident/competent second. Wonderful climb though :)

Stuart Johnston 18 May, 2014 Lead O/S Led all pitches. I was a little underwhelmed by this route. I thought that the first pitch was stella, but after that there was little climbing and a lot of disjointed scrambling, even if you keep to the crest of the ridge the whole way. A great day out, but possibly it doesn't live up to the hype.

Cherish 14 May, 2014 AltLd β A beautiful evening for it. Really loved leading the first pitch particularly - the climbing is easy (if a little slimy and wet in places) but the approach was brilliant and the booming waves really made it for me!

Jules Lane 21 Apr, 2014 AltLd O/S A real fun outing, and had the ridge to ourselves even on a Bank Holiday ! 3 really nice pitches, the first one having the best climbing (and being a bit tough for VD IMHO) and others having superbly exposed positions and superb views. The scrappy intermediate pitches were spoiled for me by excessive rope drag. Would solo it on a repeat.

spenser 19 Apr, 2014 AltLd O/S Led most of the route except for the down climb from the saddle and the final traverse. Got stuck behind 2 parties of 3 both of whom moved incredibly slowly which meant the route took 7 hours. The actual climbing was however fantastic. Did the optional 4b moves at the start and finish.

catty_9 9 Mar, 2014 - Did it in an hour and 50 minutes from leaving the gearing up ledge to getting back to it. Not rushing at all, nice and chilled and took loads of photos. Didn't do the first pitch though as huge swells that day with waves breaking halfway up the first pitch even at low tide. Simul climbed the whole thing, coming together and swapping over every couple of pitches. Lovely climbing on good holds all the way and sling placements everywhere on the second half of it.
