Drew Ruana climbs Box Therapy (Font 8C+) in RMNP

American climber Drew Ruana has made the second ascent of Daniel Woods' Box Therapy (Font 8C+) – a low start to Spread Eagle (8A) – at Box Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The boulder was first discovered by Tommy Caldwell and his father, Mike, in 2007. Caldwell established Spread Eagle which follows the line of a 20-foot seam. In 2018, Daniel Woods began walking the 6 ½ miles to attempt the obvious sit start. At 18 moves long and 50 degrees overhanging, the problem is a monster and at the grade of Font 8C+, Box Therapy is one of the hardest problems in the world.

Speaking to Climbing Magazine at the time of his ascent, Woods explained that 'there are limited footholds' and that 'the holds are pretty micro and require a lot of hand strength.'

Box Therapy equals a personal best in terms of grades for Ruana – he climbed Sleepwalker (a Jimmy Webb Font 8C+ in Red Rocks, Nevada) in January 2020 during a busy competition season in which he was attempting to qualify for the Olympics.
