Howl at the Moon Sit, 8C+, for Drew Ruana

© Jono Ruana

Drew Ruana has made the second ascent of Howl at the Moon Sit, an 8C+ boulder in Guanella Pass, Colorado. The problem, which has an 8C stand version, is on the same boulder at The Ice Knife Sit, which Ruana also made the second ascent of back in October.

Ruana's ascent, which he has said is his tenth at 8C+, further cements his position as one of the most accomplished boulderers in the world. He is now tied for the most ascents at 8C+ and above, with Daniel Woods having made nine 8C+ ascents, in addition to his 9A first ascent of Return of the Sleepwalker, to Ruana's ten.

Of these ten 8C+ boulders, Ruana has climbed five in the last twelve months.

Speaking to 8a.nu, Ruana said that he spent a significant amount of time last year working on the 8C stand version of the boulder, which is 'a much harder variation than The Ice Knife, 8B+'. He continued:

'This season I did the stand in two days and the sit the next day. I have like five more 8C+ projects I'd like to do this year if things go well. I've been building my pyramid for years and it seems to be paying off, I did my seventy-fifth 8B+ last week too'.

Whilst there is currently no footage of Ruana on the boulder, he did share the below footage of Bark at the Moon, an 8B first ascent he established later that day on the very same boulder. Make sure to watch to the end for the most understated celebration of an 8B first ascent you'll see all week.. probably.

The camera angle on the video has a really strange effect. At the bottom of the boulder Drew looks tiny and at the top he looks massive and almost the same height as the boulder itself. Maybe he underwent a huge growth spurt halfway through the moves which is why it's only 8b!!
