Leo Skinner makes fourth ascent of Paradise Found, 8C

© Leo Skinner

Leo Skinner has made the fourth ascent of Paradise Found (f8C), at Hartland Quay, Devon.

Paradise Found is Leo's first 8C, having previously climbed five 8B+ boulders - including a first ascent of Pool of Bethesda (Skindog start) (V14) - as well as around twenty boulders at 8B.

The boulder was first climbed by James Squire in the summer of 2022, with Solly Kemball-Dorey making the first repeat just a few days later. In similar fashion, Leo's own ascent of the burly roof boulder comes just two weeks after Sam Blackwell made the third ascent.

Sharing news of his ascent on instagram, Leo said:

'The last couple months have been super frustrating, despite doing some cool climbs, every climb that was at the top of my list just wasn't going to plan. As much as I'd love to pretend to be all stoic and chill about it it was doing my head in to be honest'.

'Paradise was right at the top of the list, on my short trip down here a couple weeks back I was unable to get it done even though I was getting to the end pretty much every go, but my body started giving up and had to head home empty-handed'.

'This climb was still on my mind so despite the heatwave the last few days I decided to head down in my car with five pads and a ladder (I have a Suzuki Swift I don't know how I fit them in)'.

'I forced the 6am start after sleeping in my car, and after drying holds for ages, falling off the ladder, and screwing up the top bit like a muppet, I actually got my shit together and got it done!'

'It has always been a big goal of mine to do 8C, being able to do that on such a great climb is elating for sure, the sequence on this thing is nuts and makes up for it starting off a ladder (most of the time)'.

Well done to Leo. I've not been to Heartland Quay, is there any scope for a lower start towards the back of the cave? Seems a shame that something with such cool looking moves starts off a ladder in the middle of the roof.

You can start without a ladder on some days it all depends on the height of the pebbles at the beach, Sam did it recently too and started without the ladder but sometimes it’s impossible to reach even with multiple stacked pads. Hope this helps!

Sol’s problem Bikini Bottom (9a) starts at the back of the cave, but he gave it a sport grade as it’s so long.
