The BMC is teaming up with Penguin Live to bring you Tommy Caldwell, the man that demolished El Capitan’s Dawn Wall and raced along Patagonia's Fitzroy Traverse with Alex Honnold.
Who is Tommy Caldwell?
A badass rock climber, that’s who. In 2015, after years of effort, Tommy Caldwell finally conquered the Dawn Wall, the forbidding 3,000-foot-high southwest face of El Capitan, in California's Yosemite Valley. This astonishing ascent – hailed as ‘the hardest climb of all time’ – was achieved thanks to Tommy’s immense reserves of determination and ambition to see it through.
And, even more, was not the first time Tommy's unending grit saw him through moments of incredible survival. The Dawn Wall was a climb that represented the end of a difficult recovery from the trauma of being held hostage by rebels during an earlier climbing expedition in Kyrgyzstan. Tommy’s insurmountable courage saw him able to withstand being captured by violent extremists at gunpoint and escape their clutches to return home.
Tommy last came to the UK two years ago when his talk was one of the highlights of Kendal Mountain Festival, so don't miss this rare chance to hear him speak.
When and where?
There are only two dates for this tour. Tommy will be at Sheffield City Hall Ballroom on Saturday 1 July and the RGS, London on Sunday 2 July.
What's on?
The one and only Niall Grimes will be the compere for the evening. He'll be introducing Tommy, warming up the crowd and hosting a Q&A session with Tommy after his talk.
Congratulated by President Obama for a feat he had previously been told he had no hope of achieving, don’t miss your chance to pose your question during the audience Q&A and hear directly from the man who made history by achieving the ‘impossible’.
Tommy will also be signing and dedicating books after the event so stick around after the talk to meet him in person. All books will be available for collection on the night from the on-site bookshop.
And, of course, we'll be there with a stand full of goodies and t-shirts, so come and say hello and find out more about the BMC.
