Virtually all protection in those days were slings of various sizes over flakes and spikes of various quality which between them hopefully held a fall. My own experience when leading Cemetery gates was that most came off!

No wonder the old adage "the leader must never fall". On my hit list, but it wouldn't have been back then - too much talent required (and reach, I WAS only 4)!

I'd completely forgotten the spliced No 4 hawser laid slings - inevitably fraying at the edges - thanks for the memory!
