 Steve Parker 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

Tough call. Saw both of them back in the day. I guess I'd probably give it to SLF just because I saw the Clash a bit after their prime, and saw SLF right in their best period. Tough, though, like I said. Both utterly fantastic live bands.
Rosie A 01 Mar 2007
In reply to Steve Parker: The Clash were ace.
skarabrae 01 Mar 2007

In reply to Rosie A:
> (In reply to Steve Parker) The Clash were ace.

Yeah, they bent my world anyway.
Rosie A 01 Mar 2007
In reply to Steve Parker: They came to stay in our town, Rhuain O'Lochlain had a studio in our home town, so we got to meet quite a few 'names' back then.
skarabrae 01 Mar 2007
In reply to Rosie A: ok your clash fans!! but slf r good no???
 Andy Fielding 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:
SLF with the Clash a close second!
skarabrae 01 Mar 2007
In reply to Andy Fielding: good man, slf great. stuff.
 Dave C 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

Both good but The Saints were better than either.
The Pylon King 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

Crass
Tony the Blade 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

SLF every time - seen them a stack of times since 1980, took my son last year to see them at Astoria - he loved them, but then again he's heard them all his life. It was good to see/hear them with Ali McMordie back on bass, although seeing them with Bruce Foxton was pretty cool.

Although I liked the Clash, I do think that they're the most over rated 'punk' band I've seen.
 Bokonon 01 Mar 2007
In reply to The Pylon King:

Seconded.
 nastyned 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs: I go for MDC.

Of course were not talking about your average commercial crap here and this shite thats banged out nowadays unter the heading punk is just dire poppy rich kid yank shite.
GreatBritishRob 01 Mar 2007
In reply to GreatBritishRob: Early Skrewdriver stuff aswell, especially songs like Your So Dumb (anti drugs song), bloody classic.
skarabrae 01 Mar 2007
In reply to GreatBritishRob: could`nt agree more, talking to 17 year old at climbing wallother day & he thought green day,etc.. were punk!!!
 Adders 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs: the clash by miles out of those choices.

minor threat wins the title for me though.
 Al Evans 01 Mar 2007
In reply to Adders: Well it would be The Stranglers, except they were far too good to be pigeon holed, has anybody mentioned The Buzzcocks or The Jam?
And dont forget Siouxie and the Banshees.
 Al Evans 01 Mar 2007
In reply to Al Evans: And the imortal 'Eric Snot and the Nosebleeds'
 tanssop 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

If its a choice between SLF and the clash then SLF win hands down.

Has to be said there are/were far finer bands around though - antisect, disorder, crass, DKs, etc etc
 CJD 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

wcdave 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs: SLF were a second rate, second generation punk band. They were at the fore when punk started becoming shite. And aye, I saw both in their prime, and, to this day, no band even comes close to the Clash, on record, or live.

One of my favourite quotes from that time was from one of the Undertones, talking about SLF 'Riots? What do they know about the Troubles, they're from Belfast, probably never even seen a riot'....or something.

Agree with whoever said The Saints mind. A band who really were up there with the Clash.
 andymoin 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs: In reply to wcdave: NOFX all the way!
Ste Brom 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

The Stranglers, were it. 16th birthday ran to the tattooists to get them on me. the clash were shite psuedo reggae gash, couldnt stick em at all, sandinista was quite possibly the worst, album I have ever ever heard.
Big Smudge 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:
The Stranglers.....must of seen them live over 30 times. Next best
The Damned, The Mac lads and The Ramones
 huck 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs: has to be SLF, seen them at the barrowlands a couple of times and its been amazing!
cerridwen 01 Mar 2007
In reply to Big Smudge: Gabba gabba hey!
 philo 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

help! she can't swim! are the best band.
In reply to davey_briggs:

The Clash given the 2 options

Crass, DK, Black Flag, Poison Idea also.

In reply to davey_briggs:
Out of those two: The Clash, no contest.

Others: Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat
 JLS 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

Never got into SLF but do like the Clash in a singles album sort off a way. Remember being into Sham 69 for a time as well as Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Undertones and The Jam. Mark me down as a bit of a superficial punk.
Slugger O'Toole 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

Stiff Little Fingers, I've heard of them, what country they from?

It has to be the Pogues all the way, still going after all these years, Even if Shane's teeth aren't!
 Paul Atkinson 01 Mar 2007
In reply to wcdave: "And aye, I saw both in their prime, and, to this day, no band even comes close to the Clash, on record, or live."

would say exactly the same myself but I don't agree with you about SLF - was always a big fan and thought they were superb live - they're still pretty good live in fact. Have seen most of the bands listed in the thread at one time or another (notable exceptions Pistols and DKs). There was always something very special indeed about a Clash gig. Also, their politicisation of punk meant a lot to a lot of us youngsters cf the Pistols. The sheer diversity of styles and influences on the Clash albums got a lot of my generation (myself included) out of the narrow minded punk / mod / ted / heavy tribal mindset and listening to reggae, ska, blues etc.

I don't imagine I'm going to find a new favourite now so it's the Clash at the funeral

joke surely??

Andrew Murray 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs: of the two options, The Clash - because they had the gumption to look outside the box a bit and incorporate reggae, disco, hip hop into their work. unlike Ste Brom i think Sandinista is the best thing they recorded.

Crass for the ideas, artwork and "Penis Envy", one of the greatest albums ever recorded
Black Flag for the work ethic
Husker Du for the tunes
 Siward 01 Mar 2007
In reply to Andrew Murray: Lemmy reckons he had the first punk band
 2pints 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

Bad Religion
Sticky Rubber 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

Of those two choices?

Well, today it'd have to be SLF by a short head.

Tomorrow it could well be Clash.

My worst nightmare would've been having a ticket to each for a gig on the same night.

skarabrae 01 Mar 2007
In reply to Sticky Rubber: slf march 18th 30year since release of inflammable material, there playing full album.
Slugain Howff 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs:

 2pints 01 Mar 2007
In reply to Slugain Howff:

 johnl 01 Mar 2007
In reply to davey_briggs: The Clash but then I'm biased I roadied for them. Best Punk band - Vanilla Pod though.
Slugain Howff 01 Mar 2007
In reply to 2pints:

Followed the Clash from the start. The best. Never saw them as a punk band though.
