Trace/House/Techno/EDM.... I'll be honest I've no idea which is which and why and not after a debate - lets just hop back in time and call it dance music...I know what makes me just stop, turn up the volume, smile, listen and for a brief moment escape the here and now and go to a happy place.

What are your go to happy place "dance music" tracks?

My current favourites:

Exploration of Space/Space Case/ Shivers - Armin van Buuren - From his 2024 Tomorrowland summer set - Just makes me happy, turn up the volume, sit back and smile.

What took you so long - Gryffin & Armin van Burren - Various versions available same set as above was pretty could

Are You with me - Lost Frequencies - From 2023 Tomorrowland Winter set - I ski at AdH most years, this just transports me to a sweaty tent on a carpark there and make me smile. The buildup from about 2:15 is just incredible.

Airwave(Rank 1 vs Dutch Force) - Well it just a classic...

Ben Gold - Rest of Our Lives - Just love it, opening vocal just grabs you..

Airport/Shivers - AvB again from 2023 Tomorrowland set at Freedom. Build and drop at 2:30 just makes me me smile.

Follow me - Lange - Well it's just a classic isn't it?

Survive - Kat Leon - Not a Dance track, but if you are a Sufferlandrian who likes to attack then you'll know. If you don't, then you are missing out.

What are your go to happy place tunes?

Not really into EDM but do enjoy some of it when I hear it. Of particular note would be:

Marmion Schoneberg, for obvious reasons.

Do like Insomnia by Faithless too. Probably a bit cheesy for hardcore fans but can’t help but get psyched when I hear that.

Some of my favs, of no particular genre, but generally 90s era (coinciding with being young and going raving).

Silence, Delirium (Tiesto remix) -  youtube.com/watch?v=qycAC_6Bbto&

Greece 2000, Three Drives -  youtube.com/watch?v=bO9HTBSxGbs&

The Age of Love -  youtube.com/watch?v=30eXKMfrVcw&

Universal Nation, Push -  youtube.com/watch?v=RTrXIlB1RbA&

Members of Mayday, 10 in 1 -  youtube.com/watch?v=1zMq5NAHEg8&

Olmec Heads, Spiritualised (mainly for its perfect break)  - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9C-VhnzQbKo&list=RDGMEMWO-g6DgCWEqKlDtK...

Underworld, Cowgirl  youtube.com/watch?v=aF7taNe1zKg&

Moby, Raining Again youtube.com/watch?v=y_Evl9YH39E&

Aphrodite, Stalker -  youtube.com/watch?v=64UVVP-pXRE&

Leftfield Not forgotten - youtube.com/watch?v=KX3ycvw1BJM&

Loads more. Lots of acid house, trace and D&B stuff, plus more commercial fair. A great era.

Anything from the brown album by Orbital, especially 'Remind' and 'Halcyon'

Pretty much anything by Underworld, although 'Dark & Long' and 'Juanita/Kiteless/To Dream of Love' are the ones that really do the business every time. Their remix of 'Soundsystem' by Drum Club is brilliant too and is a great excuse to listen to Sasha & Digweed's Northern Exposure which is still the best mix ever recorded

I was a real acid techno head back in the day, so anything on labels like Stay Up Forever, Smitten, Routemaster etc still brings a smile to the face, even though my BPM preference  and errr, enhancement supplements have calmed right down. 'The Rabbit's Name Was' by A&E Dept will still have me bouncing around the kitchen like I'm 20 though.

I'm listening to a lot of slower breaks and electronics these days. Just picked up an album by Zodiac Childs and there's some lush stuff on there, including this one:

PLUR. I wish I could go back to being that age, at that time, when I felt hope and real connection with other people and that the world didn't seem like such a f****** bleak mess :/

That doesn't get mentioned often, I love it. I had a DJ friend in the early 90's who used to base his set around it

Its perfect really, driving baseline, acid tweaks, rising to that ethereal vocal and strings in the middle. So so good in a club.

Few others than spring to mind, in the rave category.

Don't Go, Awesome 3 https://open.spotify.com/track/5BFeBBeBYigrM2l4njlYvA

N Joy, Anthem https://open.spotify.com/artist/0hcjDfqTgMJdAY7e83gSxs

USURA, Open your mind https://open.spotify.com/track/2VYlbeHymVKN0ABoU16DTI

Utah Saints, What can you do for me. https://open.spotify.com/album/75Nl51OzRYnIsJEYcY10Bz

I know a lot of this is rose tinted spectacles 30 years on, but the 90s really did seem like a high water mark for most electronic music. Sure there's still good stuff being made, but when you look at the breath and depth of stuff that came out in that decade, it's astonishing!

It had a real resurgence 2 or 3 years ago when Charlotte de Witte (rising DJ star) started using it in her sets.

How about a bit of Richie Hawtin before he disappeared up his own bum?

In reply to KeithWakeley:

one thing that was also great about the 90's dance/electronic music was the sheer amount of amazing LP's that were released as well. (Someone's already mentioned Orbitals Yellow and Brown albums)

stuff like

A Guy Called Gerald - Black Secret Technology - youtube.com/watch?v=ycq0XRAbTI4&

Global Communication - 76 14 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7-PD2oBvyY&t=3s

Autechre -

Incunabula -  youtube.com/watch?v=Oe3z7iPxSoc&

Amber - youtube.com/watch?v=yIyVEJd0fNc&

(not sure they're necessarily happy albums though...)

FSOL's - lifeforms - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lPGly3q-3BTDwew5JA7Y71fFzpl08...

All the Aphex Twin LP's

4Hero - Parallel Universe - youtube.com/watch?v=HRT59XUe94M&

just to name a few!

Listening to Orbital's Belfast always makes me feel like i'm on holiday! - youtube.com/watch?v=AZzJxWlvlNg&

Incunabula is my Desert Island Disc. Purchased in my first week at uni in Sheffield from Fopp on Division Street, which was coincidentally the former location of Warp Records.

The weekly Above and Beyond Group Therapy podcasts usually reveal some good recent EDM items; my brain seems to work at a typical trance BPM range so I usually listen to this type of music to work to:

A couple of older songs I like:

youtube.com/watch?v=wLV3AAnLl8I&

youtube.com/watch?v=0bj4i-sW44s&

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldU_2oSD5T0&list=RDMM&index=23

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0umdzGYeYA&list=RDMM&start_radio=1

.....these two 1 hour long mixes by Myon and Shane54 are interesting if purely for showing how much stuff you can mix together at the same time using something like Ableton:

youtube.com/watch?v=lMGq9Xw8YD4&

youtube.com/watch?v=JZElDtbiBho&

This is also a guilty pleasure:

And a couple I keep going back to -
