I have a photo of my recently passed uncle climbing in his youth. It would be great to be able to tell my dad, (late uncle's brother), where it was taken, and maybe even which route. Also if anyone could roughly date the photo from the gear / clothing that would be amazing.

Many thanks in advance.

The gear - hex on rope; Whillans harness; fig 8; modern rope; I think a wire in the back; Joe Brown helmet.  Looks like he's climbing in walking boots.  Super-strider breeches?  Snap carabiners that look aluminium not steel.

I'm going for 1975.

As for where, the Lakes?  The pose is for the camera.  No need for that move there!

Makes me think of the Milestone Buttress on Tyfan but could be anywhere

It could be Milestone Buttress. You can see the old wall in the background.

Vaguely reminiscent of Clogwyn y Wenallt, with Llyn Gwynant behind?

Definitely Milestone Buttress, you can see the wall feature from the same angle here: https://snowdoniamountainguides.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Rowan-Route....

This photo is from Pulpit Route (VD) Pulpit Route.

More likely late sixties, I’d guess. Doesn’t somehow look like the Lakes, despite what looks like a lake in the background. In the Lakes there would be trees along the water’s edge and probably a road too. I’d guess Scotland somewhere, which isn’t  much help, I know.

Just seen rest of thread, so could have not bothered!

Too early for nuts on wire in that shape I think.  And Whillans' harness was launched 1970.

I’ve similar photos, I’d guess early 70s

I'd date the fig8 to the second half of the 70's?

In reply to JimR:

I remember figure of 8s similar to that being used by friends for both abseiling & belaying when I started climbing in 1973 or 4. The selection of nuts also looks about the same date.

In reply to Doug:

you were more advanced than us then.. we were still using waist belays and over the shoulder and through the waist krab abbs

In reply to JimR:

Yes, that was the way we were abseiling in the late 60s. You had to be very careful not to get rope burns round the side of the neck when abseiling in the summer wearing just a thin shirt.

Yes, I instantly though before reading all the posts, Milestone Buttress. But I'm guessing mid 70s as I had a waist belt towards the end of the 60s after retiring my hemp waist-length. Also in 60s we were threading 3/4 nuts on one sling, and hexes were that little bit later.

Not clear but looks to me like he’s wearing a North Cape jacket. Post 1970.
