Hello,

I am just sat in the airport of Keflavik, after driving the ring road. After seeing all the amazing rock it makes me wonder if anyway has come here for a climbing trip?

Around Reykjavik you've got some pretty accessible bouldering, both the gym Klifurhusid and outdoors. Also a 20-odd metre high bolted building which is very cool albeit dodgy.

The rock is not the best and the local crags are somewhat precarious. The best destination is Hnappavellir in the East which is outstanding. A loong wall of solid rock with plenty of routes on it.

There are plenty of destinations one can go, it's gaining the opportunity to get out that is sometimes challenging. This however, makes it an even better day out because you got out!

Don't bother.

I live and work here and still fly back to the UK to climb. With so much good climbing in the UK and similar weather it's hard to justify coming here for a rock climbing holiday.

Also be prepared for 5.8 feeling like 6C.

I have heard lots of Icelandic routes have sandbag grading! Why is that?

similar weather? I thought the icelandic summer was quite a lot chilier, unless your comparing with the shetlands/orkneys

Presumably he means similar as in 'no better than' UK.

I tried once, but when I fell off a shelf and into the pizzas, they escorted me out. manager very unsympathetic to my protests of ruining my chances of flashing the carte d'or display

The temperatures are similar and you get just as many dry days for the chance to climb as the UK. It's not much colder here.

I have no idea why all the grades are sandbag.

They are all compared to Icelands first 5:10 which in itself is much harder than the grade given - so the story goes anyway.

There's are lot of rock out here but it's all wasted, too loose to climb.

And UK rock climbing is world class so its hard to justify.
