It is indeed a fine crag.Sad but maybe a sign of the times that it needs to be flagged.30 years ago you would have been queing up for most routes.C'est la vie

In reply to andybirtwistle: To be fair, I think it's only the NW Frontier that's neglected.

In reply to UKC Articles: Going up there on sunday cant wait. First time climbing in Lakeland always gone to Wales up till now but petrol's too much lately. Is the other Gimemr stuff always busy? Does the quieter stuff dry slower?

Gimmer is far from neglected. I think it was an article just highlighting some routes which get less traffic. It's a big crag. It can be windy and cold, particularly on the north side, so be prepared. Most of it is fast drying, again the north side cold and slower to dry. Have fun and hope the weather is kind.

In reply to JonC: Cheers. Weather not looking too good according to Metguess, 231mph winds! Must be an error http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/7days.asp?zipcode=windermere

In reply to Red Rover: Yes to both your questions! To be perfectly honest most of the routes in the article, because they are less travelled, can be a bit mossy and dry slower. Sadly, the start of the second pitch of Hiatus gets emerald colour in a wet period, but the rest of the route is so splendid it would be churlish to complain.
BTW, I'm astonished to read that over 4000 people have read (or at least looked at) this article. I really do hope I have inspired a few of those people to explore this neglected area, and would love to hear from anyone who went there as a result of reading it (as long as they're not asking for their money back).

In reply to Red Rover: Don't give up on the weather just yet. http://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/weatherline
I'd concur with other comments about being prepared for it to be cool. The crag is very exposed to all but NE winds (oh, to have some of those for a change!) but that does make it quick drying. And the crag does have three fairly distinct facets so you can usually find some shelter somewhere if you're prepared to be adaptable. But I have to say that westerly winds look to be on the cards.
Good luck with the weather and hope you enjoy it.

In reply to Rog Wilko:

Nice article - cheers. I've done most of the obvious classics on the front of Gimmer but none of the routes you describe. They sound great, I'll try and make the effort next time I'm there.

I've done three of the routes you mention Rog and agree that they are well worth doing. We actually did Hiatus for the first time last year on your recommendation from the logbook - so people do listen to you!

In reply to Rog Wilko: Not bothered if its cold and windy I'm used to that I'm just hoping its dry. Looks like it might be 50/50 if its wet I can just do VDiffs

In reply to UKC Articles: Went to the crag, it looks great but it was slimey and it didnt seem like the weather for drying anything so we made do with scout crags instead which were OK but Gimmer and other things like Pavey Ark look great
 Al Evans 22 Aug 2011
In reply to Red Rover: White Ghyll is a great crag often sheltered if Gimmer is a bit exposed.
