The lowest point was actually last night - crowds swaying from side to side, lighters held aloft, U2 doing a Coldplay cover - mind you, Bono told us they were still 'Out of Control', so that's Ok then......

U2 were fantastic in their day, and I still occasionally listen to their early albums, but the time has gone for them. Coldplay are technically clever but their songs are written to a formula and are not in anyway new or creative, a computer will be writing better songs in a few years time.

It's bland "so middle of the road it needs white lines painting on it", soft rock pap for the non-discerning; "oh well I best have a taste in music, lots of people like this so I will too", of the sort that dentists and accountants fill their humdrum boring days with.

Throw in the sanctimonious hypocritical proclamations of; "feed the starving but buy a first class seat for your hat, I've met the pope me," tax dodging Bongo, and environmental disaster area "The Ledge" of U2, and it's beyond nauseating.

It's the musical equivalent of golf or shepherds pie.

Coldplay are just as bad, but with less chutzpah.

If you are asking whether I was suggesting that Coldplay are as great as Beethoven then the answer is an emphatic no. Because Beethoven is without doubt one of the greatest and time proven writers of music ever and was not averse to writing to a formula, I was simply arguing that it is unreasonable to criticise Coldplay (or indeed anyone else)for doing so.

Clauso 26 Jun 2011

There's no comparison. Beethoven's dead and overrated. Ask yourself did Beethoven ever have a number one album or get to shag Gwyneth Paltrow?... I think not and rest my case.

It is not just reasonable to do so, it is in fact a moral obligation. Coldplay are sh1t precisely because they are formulaic (and boring, and pretentious, and out of date. As independent, intelligent, human beings we are obliged to criticise them.

Incidentally, I wouldn't dismiss Wagner's music because he was anti-semitic any more than I would dismiss Bono's because he is allegedly a "tw@t".

I suspect that all the greatest musicians (and artists and writers) from Bach, Mozart and Beethoven to whoever of today's crop end up standing the test of time are both immitators and innovators.

So, to shorten that into a catchy phrase, take the m and substitute it for the r in rockers and you've got 'mockers'. That works for me.

I think it's nice that commercial music is slowly destroying itself and the likes of Simon Cowell (and Gastonbury it seems) are helping to build the coffin. Maybe the next X Factor tour could be timed to take in the main stage? Then we could all go home early stroking are ironic Hoxton mullets and do something better.

Yes definitely The Doors, good plan, they could headline on the Sunday. Jimi on the Saturday. That would be more than enough for the dead people! Then maybe Kasabian, The Strokes, Arcade Fire.

It's difficult. I want some Nas or Tupac in there, but I know it would fail badly.

Purely from a booking perspective, she only got to hit mega-stardom a few months ago, and I suspect this line-up was finalised back in October, or November last year.

Personally, I could probably just about live with Adele wailing away in the background at a festival on a lovely, warm summer's evening, but when it's a cold, wet, rainy mudbath? No thanks... Not even if you can find the stall that sells coffee, cognac and cream - which helped quite a bit at the Reading Festival I was at where it rained and rained and rained...

Mind you, I'll admit to quite liking Coldplay and U2 up till Achtung Baby so I don't suppose I'm one to talk!

Snobbery about bands always makes me laugh, it is music for the masses but if the masses like 'em then fair play. It leaves the really good bands for the rest of us.

I'm a bit of a hoor when it comes to music and have fairly broad tastes, I'm happy listening to Opera, folkie stuff, trad Gaelic peurt a bheul, Metal (huge Maiden fan), prog, Thrash, pop cheese (guilty pleasure: Ellie Goulding, and I'm NOT sorry), indie, Trance....

The difference is that the composers you mention were also rather good - something that has terminally eluded Coldplay. They are purveyors of mediocre radio friendly shite that appeals to the calloused ears of the brainwashed masses.

U2 are shit now as well, largely because they sound like coldplay. They were good up to War though.

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no NO!!!

Awful, just awful band. Saw them in Inverness and at another function recently and they are beyond shite. Utter baws. I'm all for being tolerant and open minded about other people's taste in music but there's a line you just don't cross, and you sir have crossed that line.

Go and listen to Julie Fowlis and have a word with yourself.

Red Hot Chili Pipers.... <<shudders>>

Best festival ever was Feile 94 in Tipperary.

Blur

Bjork

Bob Geldof

Rage against the Machine

Cypress Hill

House of Pain

The Prodigy

Elvis Costello

and...erm..Crowded House but they were actually very good.

This thread is now officially over.

RATM
Cypress Hill (they played together on a couple of tracks, brilliant!)
Bjork
Pulp
Manics
Blur
Crash Test Dummies (!)
Levellers
Grant Lee Buffalo
Primal Scream
Oasis

+1 for 'Parachutes' being an astoundingly good album.

It all has time and a place.

Just as breakcore, bhangra, skiffle, dub-step, delta blues, cajun folk, house, modal jazz, opera, indie, barbershop, death metal, etc all have a worthy place in the vast spectrum of music that expresses the vast spectrum of human experience.

Don't be narrow minded.

Great line-up. However, I beg to differ. I take your Feile '94 and I raise it by Reading '92, easily the greatest festival line-up of all time:

Nirvana
Mudhoney
Pavement
The Wonderstuff
The Charlatans
Public Image Limited
PJ Harvey
Redd Kross
Public Enemy
Ride
EMF
Manic Street Preachers
The Farm
Smashing Pumpkins
Rollins Band
Thousand Yard Stare
Buffalo Tom
Therapy?
Nick Cave
Teenage Fanclub
L7
Beastie Boys
Bjorn Again
Screaming Trees
The Melvins
Cracker
Midway Still
Suede
Sunscreem
Shonen Knife
Urge Overkill
Catherine Wheel
 Tom Last 26 Jun 2011

Ha, can easily top that:

Glasto '95

Pulp
Black Crowes
Portishead
Massive Attack
Orbital
PJ Harvey
Jeff Buckley
The Cure
Simple Minds
The Prodigy
Offspring
Weezer
Supergrass
Dreadzone
The Shamen
The Charlatans
Chemical (Dust?) Bros
Steeleye Span
Gil Scott Heron

and loads of other bollox like Oasis and the Verve.

90s-tastic!

In reply to death drop: I don't know what all the fuss is. Beyonce right now. Who wouldn't. For decades it's been about making money and the line up these days appeals to this generation. The whole festival thing is complete bolox and nowt compared to a band in a proper sensibly sized venue. It's a money making circuit the bands are happy to be part of as it's easy money compared to touring.

I missed the first half of Nirvana and the wheelchair incident. They went downhill when they released Nevermind in my opinion. Even lower when they went melancholic and worse, acoustic.

having just got back can only say that glastonbury is alive and kicking, certainly prefer it now compared to the mid-late 90's with the all the violence and anger, so much friendlier these days. Yes headliners on the pyramid stage weren't my cup of tea but you don't have to spend the whole time at the main stage you know, still loads of great new music to discover every time i go, for example stumbling across Omar Souleyman (well new to me at least). Anyway i'm going to sit in bath, have some food and some well needed rest

i always love the way that "glastonbury is shite" arguments always revolve around the televised shite from the pyramid stage... there are about 30 stages at glastonbury; the pyramid stage simply attracts the sort of twits who get excited about codplay, u2, beyonce etc which is great because you don't then get those people at the cabaret tent, leftfield stage, spirit of 71, croissant neuf, west holts, bimble inn, rabbit hole, other stage, avalon stage, the glade, park stage etc etc etc... even so, this year i saw fisherman's friend, tame impala, morrisey, elbow and the low anthem on the pyramid stage and they were all fricking excellent.

In reply to Dom Whillans: Spot on. The last time I went to Glastonbury a few years back, I don't think I saw anyone playing on the Pyramid Stage, other than when walking past to get to a different stage. Whilst the target audience is shifting towards the Radio 1 crowd, that seems to be confined to the main stages. You can still have an amazing experience akin to Glasto's gone by, where you can catch some amazing bands and performers.

Wasn't that the year the L7 singer was getting s**t off the crowd. Got pissed off reached in her kecks and pulled out a tampon and throw it in the crowd? I seem to remember her shouting something like "eat my used tampon"
