recently jeff buckleys 'lover, you should've come over' has been rattling around in my head. especially this bit

"...its never over,
my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder,
...its never over,
all my riches for her smile, when i step so soft against her,
...its never over,
all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter,
...its never over,
she's a tear that hangs inside my soul forever....

but maybe i'm just too young, to keep good love from going wrong...."

reading the words doesn't do it justice, but when you hear the passion in his voice, the emotion.... its fantastic! Its the sort of song that stops you in your tracks, and reduces you to a blubbering mess.

<ahem>, (re-affirming his masculinity) um, anyway, that 50 cent is 'proper bo' is he not?

Pretty words, yes. Shame about the outdated, and somewhat depressing nature of the sounds in which this singer/songwriter dogma is emersed.....!

In reply to wildcountryfriend: Speaking of Jeff Buckley, his version of Hallelujah was heavily featured in a German film The Edukators I saw last night. My fave Jeff Buckley lyrics are those to 'The Sky is a Landfill' (very dark, angry political protest song).

In reply to wildcountryfriend:

oh! used to listen to this every morning in the car for about 6 months, cried my heart out every day

better now, and still listening to it, it's so beautiful

this one also has such a massive impact on me personally:

Well, there was a man who lived in a shed. Spent most of his days out of his head.
For his shed was rotten let in the rain, said it was enough to drive any man insane.
When it rained, he felt so bad. When it snowed he felt just simply sad.

Well, there was a girl who lived nearby. Whenever he saw her he could only simply sigh.
But she lived in a house so very big and grand, for him it seemed like some very distant land.
So when he called her, his shed to mend, she said, I'm sorry you'll just have to find a friend.

Well, this story is not so very new. The man is me, and the girl is you.
So leave your house, come into my shed. Please stop my world from raining through my head.
Please don't think I'm not your sort. You'll find that sheds are nicer than you thought.

lyrics just don't do it justice, you're right

Not meaning full but cool:

If I say I don´t need anyone
I can say these things to you ´cause
I can turn on anyone just like I´ve turn on you
I´ve got a tongue like a razor, a sweet switchblade knife
And I can do you favors but then you´ll do whatever I like.

In reply to wildcountryfriend:

again, NIck Drake:

Time has told me

Time has told me
You're a rare rare find
A troubled cure
For a troubled mind.

And time has told me
Not to ask for more
Someday our ocean
Will find its shore.

So I`ll leave the ways that are making me be
What I really don't want to be
Leave the ways that are making me love
What I really don't want to love.

Time has told me
You came with the dawn
A soul with no footprint
A rose with no thorn.

Your tears they tell me
To stay by my side
To keep on trying
'til there's no more to hide.

So leave the ways that are making you be
What you really don't want to be
Leave the ways that are making you love
What you really don't want to love.

Time has told me
You're a rare rare find
For some day our ocean
Will find its shore.

In reply to wildcountryfriend:

not a lyric of great emotional charge, but it sprang to mind after a chat at work about Big Brother: "Look at me! I'm on TV It makes up for the shortcomings of being poor" (Belle and Sebastian, If you're Feeling Sinister).
yatesy 10 Jun 2005
In reply to CJD:

Nick Drake is so utterly compelling. The depth of those lyrics and their veiled agony/passion makes me wither.

Difficult to take lyrics out of context of the music that they form a psrtnership with but some Jackson Browne lines are exquisite.

"...and we can fill in the missing colours
in each other's paint-by-number dreams"

Ah, just an old romantic
 Marc C 10 Jun 2005
In reply to yatesy: Good choice. Jackson Browne's lyrics rank with the very best. Take any of the songs on Late for the Sky and The Pretender and you'll find some understated yet emotive reflections on the human condition.

From memory...

Looking through some photographs
In a drawer the other day
I came upon a photograph of you
There were one or two maybe you'd have liked a little more
But they didn't catch your spirit quite as true.
You were looking to see who was behind you
and I caught your childish laughter by surprise
and at the moment that my camera happened to find you
There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes.

Fountain of sorrow
Fountain of light
you've known that hollow sound of your own footateps in flight
Jules Lewis 10 Jun 2005

I'll see your Time Has Told Me / Man In The Shed, and raise you Fruit Tree:

Fame is but a fruit tree
So very unsound.
It can never flourish
Till its stock is in the ground.
So men of fame
Can never find a way
Till time has flown
Far from their dying day.
Forgotten while you're here
Remembered for a while
A much updated ruin
From a much outdated style.

Life is but a memory
Happened long ago.
Theatre full of sadness
For a long forgotten show.
Seems so easy
Just to let it go on by
Till you stop and wonder
Why you never wondered why.

Safe in the womb
Of an everlasting night
You find the darkness can
Give the brightest light.
Safe in your place deep in the earth
That's when they'll know what you were really worth.
Forgotten while you're here
Remembered for a while
A much updated ruin
From a much outdated style.

Fame is but a fruit tree
So very unsound.
It can never flourish
Till its stock is in the ground.
So men of fame
Can never find a way
Till time has flown
Far from their dying day.

Fruit tree, fruit tree
No-one knows you but the rain and the air.
Don't you worry
They'll stand and stare when you're gone.

Fruit tree, fruit tree
Open your eyes to another year.
They'll all know
That you were here when you're gone.

If you want a fight, then I'll have to use Northern Sky:

I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.

I've been a long time that I'm waiting
Been a long that I'm blown
I've been a long time that I've wandered
Through the people I have known
Oh, if you would and you could
Straighten my new mind's eye.

Would you love me for my money
Would you love me for my head
Would you love me through the winter
Would you love me 'til I'm dead
Oh, if you would and you could
Come blow your horn on high.

I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.

In reply to CJD:

In that case, I'm going to have to bring in the number one song-writer of all time...

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains,
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways,
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests,
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans,
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it,
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin',
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin',
I saw a white ladder all covered with water,
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken,
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin',
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world,
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin',
Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin',
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin',
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter,
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony,
I met a white man who walked a black dog,
I met a young woman whose body was burning,
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow,
I met one man who was wounded in love,
I met another man who was wounded with hatred,
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin',
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden,
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,
Where black is the color, where none is the number,
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin',
But I'll know my song well before I start singin',
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

PS I would like to add:

I was born to love no one
No one to love me
Only the wind in the long green grass
The frost in a broken tree.

I was made to love magic
All its wonder to know
But you all lost that magic
Many many years ago.

I was born to use my eyes
Dream with the sun and the skies
To float away in a lifelong song
In the mist where melody flies.

I was made to love magic...

I was born to sail away
Into a land of forever
Not to be tied to an old stone grave
In your land of never.

I was made to love magic...

Perfect moments have a clean design
Scoring edges that arrest the flow
Skis cut diamonds in the plump of snow
Times my life feels like a friend of mine

Perfect moments wear a single face
Variations on each other's theme
Renoir's mistresses in peach and cream
Rembrandt's mother in a ruff of lace

Perfect moments bear a single name
They're placed together though they never meet
Charlie Chaplin policing Easy Street
Charlie Parker playing My Old Flame

Perfect moments should redeem the day
Their teeming richness ought to be enough
To take the sting out of the other stuff
A perfect bitch, it doesn't work that way

A perfect bitch, it doesn't work that way

This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the door way
I went out in the rain
Suddenly everything changed their spread
Blankets on the beach

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
I don't know where I am
I don't know where I've been
But I know where I want to go
So I thought I'd let you know
These things take forever, I especially am slow
But I realized how I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

I remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
Yeah I thought it was strange
You said everything changed
You felt as if you just woke up

My 2 fav songs at the moment

Goo Goo Dolls NAME

And even though
The moment passed me by
I still can't turn away
'Cause all the dreams
You never thought you'd lose
Got tossed along the way
And letters that
You never meant to send
Get lost or thrown away
And now we're grown up orphans
That never knew their names
We don't belong to no one
That's a shame

But if you could hide beside me
Maybe for a while
And I won't tell
No one your name
And I won't tell 'em
Your name

And scars are souvenirs
You never lose
The past is never far
Did you lose yourself
Somewhere out there
Did you get to be a star
And don't it make you sad
To know that life
Is more than who we are

We grew up way too fast
And now there's
Nothing to believe
Reruns all become our history
A tired song keeps playing
On a tired radio
And I won't tell
No one your name
And I won't tell 'em
Your name
I won't tell 'em
Your name
Mmm, mmm, mmm

I won't tell 'em
Your name
Ow
I think about you all the time
But I don't need the same
It's lonely where you are
Come back down,
And I won't tell 'em
Your name

Coldplay - Swallowed in the sea

You cut me down a tree
And brought it back to me
And that's what made me see
Where I was going wrong
You put me on a shelf
And kept me for yourself
I can only blame myself
You can only blame me

And I could write a song
A hundred miles long
Well, that's where I belong
And you belong to me

And I could write it down
Or spread it all around
Get lost and then get found
Or swallowed in the sea

You put me on a line
And hung me out to dry
And darling that's when I
Decided to go to see you

You cut me down to size
And opened up my eyes
Made me realize
What I could not see

And I could write a book
The one they'll say that shook
The world, and then it took
It took it back from me

And I could write it down
Or spread it all around
Get lost and then get found
And you'll come back to me
Not swallowed in the sea

Ooh...

And I could write a song
A hundred miles long
Well, that's where I belong
And you belong with me

The streets you're walking on
A thousand houses long
Well, that's where I belong
And you belong with me

Oh what good is it to live
With nothing left to give
Forget but not forgive
Not loving all you see

Oh the streets you're walking on
A thousand houses long
Well that's where I belong
And you belong with me
Not swallowed in the sea

You belong with me
Not swallowed in the sea
Yeah, you belong with me
Not swallowed in the sea

Both have a lot of meaning for me.

The second verse of Name is very powerful.

Life is a waterfall,
We're one in the river,
And one again after the fall.

Swimming through the void
We hear the word,
We lost ourselves,
But we find it all?

Cause we are the ones that want to play,
Always want to go,
But you never want to stay,

And we are the ones that want to chose,
Always want to play,
But you never want to lose.

Aerials, in the sky,
When you lose small mind,
You free your life.

Life is a waterfall,
We drink from the river,
Then we turn around and put up our walls.

Swimming through the void
We hear the word,
We lost ourselves,
But we find it all?

Cause we are the ones that want to play,
Always want to go,
But you never want to stay,

And we are the ones that want to chose,
Always want to play,
But you never want to lose.

Aerials, in the sky,
When you lose small mind,
You free your life.
Aerials, so up high,
When you free your eyes,
Eternal prize.
Aerials, in the sky,
When you lose small mind,
You free your life.
Aerials, so up high,
When you free your eyes,
Eternal prize.

Bollocks!
These lyrics blow my mind on a daily basis:

Hey witch doctor, give us the magic words!
Alright, you go: Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang.

Alright!
Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang}
Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang.} (repeat x3) .

I told the witch doctor, I was in love with you
I told the witch doctor, I was in love with you
And then the witch doctor, he told me what to do
He told me:

Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang
Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang (repeat x2) .

I told the witch doctor, you didn't love me true
I told the witch doctor, you didn't love me nice
And then the witch doctor, he gave me this advice:

Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang
Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang (repeat x2) .

You can keep your love from me just like you were a miser,
And I'll admit it wasn't very smart,
But I went out to find my-self a guy that's so much wiser,
And he told me the way to win your heart:

Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah
Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah
Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah
Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, ging, bang

Come on and:

Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang
Ooh, eeh, ooh, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang (repeat x2) .

they made some real good friends,

they made some good friends,

now they all meet up for boxercise,

They buy soup in cartons,

They buy soup in cartons,

They buy soup in cartons,

And keep a torch in the back of the car,

They go to one-day cricket,

They go to one-day cricket,

They go to one-day cricket,

and choose the pub thats got the ball pond for the kids,

They treat the mercury music,

They treat the mercury music,

They treat the mercury music,

They seem to think,

They seem to think,
it's a really good idea
They seem to think,
it's a really good idea

He gets over emontional,
when he's drunk,
He gets all too emotional,
when he's drunk,
He gets over emontional,

If I'd have known they were coming, I'd have slashed me wrists

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Good effort. I never got to see them live, but heard stories from friends who did. I tried to make up for it by listening to their music relentlessly in the late 70's early 80's and still revisit from time to time. I would have liked to have seen Genesis early on as well.

I saw Pink Floyd on the Division Bell tour in 1994. I am sorry to say that it was pretty much the spectacle of men fattening their wallets. That they play Wall stuff kind of shows a lack of integrity, I think.

It was good and impressive, by the way, just utterly passionless, rehearsed to hell and back and hence no dynamism to it.
Concerts where you can rent binoculars, and but popcorn, hot dogs and glossy "tour souvenir programmes" are not my cup of tea, though. Nor are concerts where they sell tickets for seats that are right behind a concrete pillar, that just smacks of utter greed and thoughtlessness (not blaming Pink Floyd for that, by the way!)

So in essence, I would not rate them as top live performers. They are totally a studio band (fair play to them), and they are so free of on stage charisma that they HAVE to have the spectacular films and lasers and inflatable pigs and fireworks, to keep everyone awake during the intro to Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

Try and get tickets? All of the instructions are on the website. You probabily wont get another chance to see them live..
Its just a shame Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix arn't around to join them. They must have been aweome!

Some how I will get tickets for this, I wont miss it.

In reply to Kenny: I was thinking of the concerts they did back in the 70's.
